Paul L. HANES Obituary
HANES, Paul L. Paul L. Hanes died peacefully November 20, 2017 after a long illness. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1941 and moved with his family to Decatur, Georgia at age four. He was educated at Decatur High School and graduated at Emory University where he was a member of the SAE fraternity. He was first in his class at Emory Law School, and the Georgia Bar Association's 1965 Law Graduate of the year. He served as Georgia's Assistant Attorney General and as Tax Commissioner. He then began a long and distinguished career in private practice, during which he started successful law partnerships and also served as Secretary and a chief lobbyist for the Georgia Beer Wholesaler's Association. A true "lawyer's lawyer," he was an enthusiastic member of the Old War Horse Lawyer's Club and served as its president in 2003. He was a longtime resident of Ansley Park and member of the Ansley Golf Club since 1967. As president of the Ansley Park Civic Association around 1970 he helped to insure zoning to protect the residences and maintain a safe family neighborhood. He was a lover of music, a raconteur, an avid reader of history, fond of dogs and children. He was a parishioner of All Saints Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife, Susan; brother Joseph and sister-in-law June Hanes; sons Christopher, Patrick, and Timothy; step-son Keith Tyson; and nine grandchildren. Paul also helped raise Clea Fields Schiffmacher who now resides in New York. The family thanks Hollander Senior Living in Sandy Springs for excellent care they provided him. Friends and colleagues are invited to an open house to honor Paul on Saturday, December 30th, 2-5 pm, at the home of his son Timothy Hanes, 2518 Coralwood Drive, Decatur 30033. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation, 5400 Glenridge Dr., NE, #422471, Atlanta, GA 30342, www.sbtf.org.
