Raymond PERNER Obituary
PERNER, Raymond Floyd January 23, 1928 - January 6, 2018. Ray Perner of Atlanta, beloved husband, father, grandfather, father -in- law, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 6th. Born 1928 in San Antonio, Tx., he was the son of Oscar and Tilly Perner. Ray served in the U.S. Air Force in Labrador Canada for the Air & Sea Rescue Squadron at Goose Airforce Base. Ray graduated from the University of Texas, and majored in Mechanical Engineering with a Minor in Petroleum Engineering. He began his Engineering career at Shell Oil Company in the Research & Development office in Houston, Tx., and was instrumental in developing the next generation of offshore drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. It was also in Houston that he met his wife Isabell, at a church they both attended. Ray was able to leverage his engineering and design expertise, and transferred his talents to the Aero Space Industry, and worked for Douglas Air Craft Company on an advanced Surface to Air Missile Program. Ray moved his young family to Atlanta in 1966 to work for the Lockheed Corporation. He helped design and build the C-5 Aircraft, the world's largest military transport aircraft. Ray was instrumental in the design of the landing gear, and was one of the first civilians to fly in the C-5 aircraft. In 1974 he went to work for Oxford Chemicals and spent the next 10 years designing and building equipment for the Food Safety Industry. The company wanted to transfer him to their headquarters in Chicago, but by that time Ray had decided that he would never move his family from Atlanta. He spent the next 14 years working with various Engineering Consulting Firms as a Senior Design Process Engineer, and retired in 1998. Supporting his family was first and foremost for Ray. He demonstrated that to his children with his endless support of their numerous school, sports, & church activities. Ray belonged to Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, and served as an Usher for many years. His other interests were Woodworking and Landscaping. He enjoyed spending time in his wood working shop, and improving the landscape around the home that he lived in for 48 years. Three years ago, Ray moved from his home to Lenbrook in Brookhaven. His friends at Lenbrook knew him as a true gentleman. Throughout his life he was respectful to all, and was never condescending or to anyone. He is survived by his daughter Jeanette Wheatley of Gainesville, Ga. and her husband Bob Wheatley, their children Callie Wheatley and Connor Wheatley, John Perner of Atlanta and his wife Lisa Perner; his son J. Colin Perner Jr. and daughter, Carlie Perner, and James Perner of Birmingham, Al. and daughter Tatum Kelley. A service will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, January 13th at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Families of Children Under Stress (FOCUS) www.focus-ga.org.
