Samuel HARRELL Obituary
HARRELL, Samuel Riddick Samuel Riddick Harrell, age 88, passed away on Friday, October 6 after a long battle with Alzheimer's and cancer. Sam was born on November 13, 1928 in Portsmouth, VA to parents Peyton Keith Harrell and Louise van Patten Harrell. He was predeceased by his only sibling Louise H. Clark. He is survived by his wife, the former Lossie Lynch of Kings Mountain, NC; his two daughters, Jane H. Kelley (Dan) and Amy H. Penn (Sean); and his three grandchildren, Elizabeth Kelley, Charles Penn and Kathryn Penn. Sam grew up on a peanut farm outside Suffolk, VA where he milked cows before school, played with his little billy goat and cart, and rode on the backs of the farming mules. After graduating from Chuckatuck High School, Sam went into the Air Force during the Korean Conflict, serving four years. Upon leaving the service, he went to NC State in Raleigh and earned his Electrical Engineering degree in 1956. His first position out of college was with Southern Bell, and he later worked for Law Engineering Company and Heery International, retiring in 1992. Sam was a lifelong Methodist with a good tenor voice. He sang in every church choir where he was a member and for the last 40 years at Dunwoody United Methodist Church. The service will be at Dunwoody United Methodist Church at 3pm on Thursday, October 12 with visitation at the church at 2pm. The family will host a reception immediately after the service at the home.
