Sarah Elmira (Vaughn) SMITH Obituary
SMITH (Vaughn), Sarah Elmira Sarah Smith was born December 8, 1915 in Whistler, Alabama, the daughter of Reverend Heywood Taylor Vaughan, a Baptist minister, and Mamie Payne Vaughan. She graduated from Vina, Alabama High School and the University of Montevallo, cum laude with a BA in Education. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and the American Association of University Women. She also attended the University of Northern Alabama and Louisiana Tech. Her teaching career included schools in Franklin County, Alabama; University of Montevallo Training School, Gadsden, Alabama; Spring Street School, Atlanta; and the Child Development Center, First Baptist Church, Decatur, Georgia. She married Paul Alton Smith in 1943, and they lived in San Juan, Puerto Rico where Paul was placed with the U.S. Civil Service Commission during Word War II. They eventually settled in Decatur where they lived together for 65 years until Paul's passing in 2009. Sarah was active in the First Baptist Church of Decatur serving as deacon, Sunday School teacher, on various committees, and in the Women's Missionary Union. Sarah is survived by two children, David and wife Judy Smith of Rome,Georgia, Anne and husband Charles Moore of Beaufort, South Carolina; grandchildren Colin Moore and wife Lauren Gianino, Jason and wife Yumi Smith, Jennifer and husband Jeff Thornton, Shannon and husband Warren Darby, Jessica and husband Adrian Doria, Joy and husband Sam Widman; nine great grandchildren, Julian Smith, Jacob and Jackson Thornton, Taylor and Walker Darby, Alexander and Christian Doria, and Zachary and Harper Widman; and nieces. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 3 from 1 to 2 PM at A. S. Turner and Sons with funeral services to be held at Decatur Cemetery, Dr. Peter Rhea Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Decatur or Medlock Gardens Senior Living.
