JACOBSEN, Shirley L. Shirley Lunde Jacobsen passed away on December 15, 2017. She was born in West Haven, CT and is survived by her beloved husband, Don Jacobsen, daughter, Donna Lee Poe, and husband Dr. Thaddaeus Poe of Danville, IN, son, Dwight Jacobsen and wife Sally Jacobsen of Ridgewood, NJ: eight grandchildren, Ryan, Taylor, Kristen, Heather and Jacob Poe and Sara, Jamie and David Jacobsen and three great Poe grandchildren Graham, Miles and Elisabeth. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers and one sister. She is survived by three other sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Jacobsen received her undergraduate degree from Taylor University in Indiana in Secondary Education in 1952 and studied at Columbia University's Teachers College in New York City. After teaching high school in Tarrytown, NY and Tenafly, NJ she married Don in 1955 and accompanied him to Japan during his military years of 1955-1956. She substituted during her early years of marriage in various public schools. Shirley later earned her certificate in Testing and Remediating Learning Disabilities from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, NC. Her primary responsibility was as a homemaker and mother to her children who she adored. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life. Her volunteer work included tutoring children with Learning Disabilities, teaching adults English as a second language and mentoring engaged couples. She was also a hostess at the Governor's Manson once a month in Georgia and a volunteer in the Assistance League of Atlanta. For twelve years she was Chairman and then Area Director in three states for Christian Women's Clubs. Shirley was an active member of Perimeter Church (Presbyterian Church of America) in Johns Creek, GA. The Jacobsen's enjoyed living in ten different states and traveling to many countries around the world by land and cruises. The Life Celebration Service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 2:00pm at Perimeter Church, 9500 Medlock Bridge Road Johns Creek, GA 30097. Don and the family will receive friends immediately following in the Day Chapel at the same Johns Creek address. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Taylor University, for the Don and Shirley Jacobsen Endowed Scholarship Fund, 236 West Reade, Avenue, and Upland, IN 46989-1001.
