Thomas David JONES Obituary
JONES, Thomas David Thomas ("Tom") David Jones, a retired newspaper publisher and Chairman of the Gwinnett County Chamber of Commerce, passed away peacefully in his home on November 10, 2017. Despite his numerous professional achievements, Tom's greatest source of pride was his loving wife Sheila, his three children and his eight grandchildren. Tom was born in Peoria, Illinois September 3, 1939 to David and Dorothy Jones. Tom was outgoing and ambitious and played all sports while growing up. After graduating from Western Illinois University with a business administration degree, Tom began a career in radio and television broadcasting. Tom later became the president and publisher of Tazewell Publishing Company in Morton, Illinois, which operated daily and weekly newspapers. In 1981, Tom took a position in Walnut Creek, California as the president and CEO of Lesher Communications which published daily and weekly newspapers in the suburbs of San Francisco. By 1988, Tom had become the president of the Gwinnett Daily News which was later acquired by the New York Times. Throughout his publishing career, Tom was active in charitable, civic, and community organizations. He was the past president of Suburban Newspapers of America and was the only person to serve two terms as the association's president. Tom is survived by his wife Sheila, the love of his life for 53 years; his daughter and son-in-law Angela and Richard Fortwengler, Alpharetta, Georgia; his daughter and son-in-law Tina and Sage Ridgely, Sugar Hill, Georgia; his son and daughter-in-law David and Kelli Jones, Berkeley Lake, Georgia; his brother and his wife Jerry and Karla Jones, Geneva, Illinois; Sheila's brother and his wife, John and Terry Lowe, Farmington, Illinois; his uncle and his wife George and Karolyn Sebree, Venice, Florida; and his grandchildren, Joe, James, Christina, and Caroline Fortwengler, Marisa and Stephen Ridgley, Ryan and Amelia Jones. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 14th at 12:00 and friends will be received at 11:00 a.m. at Crowell Brothers Funeral Homes & Crematory in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. prior. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations to be made to Epiphany Lutheran Church, Suwanee, Georgia or the Georgia SPCA. Online condolences may be expressed at www.crowellbrothers.com.
