Thomas Shealy Obituary
SHEALY, Thomas Thomas T. "Sonny" Shealy was born on May 31, 1931 in Reynolds, Georgia. The son of Elbert Theodore Shealy and Gladys Herring Shealy, Sonny grew up in the small town of Reynolds. His mother passed away when he was 18, and his dad remarried Ann Perryman. Growing up in Reynolds, Sonny enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working both on the family farm and in the family store. His biggest passion, however, was baseball. Sonny was a baseball superstar in middle Georgia and had the opportunity to sign minor league contracts with two professional baseball teams; however, he opted to attend the University of Georgia and play baseball for the Bulldogs. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Order at UGA. After graduating from Georgia with a BBA in Finance, Sonny fulfilled his ROTC obligations by serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Tactical Air Command in the United States Air Force in Ramstein, Germany. He flew in missions as a navigator in the Berlin Airlift in the Allied Powers' efforts to break the Soviet Union blockade of Berlin. After his military service, Sonny moved to Macon, GA to begin his career in mortgage banking at Fickling and Walker. He married Sylvia Tabor in September of 1957, and they raised three children in Macon and made many lifetime friendships. They enjoyed many years in Macon with neighborhood friends on Newport Road and Guerry Drive, church friends at Forest Hills UMC, friends in the Civic Club and at Idle Hour Country Club, and many others. In the community, his efforts included being a trustee of the Methodist Children's Home and of the United Way, serving as President of Macon Big Brother Association and on the Bibb County Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society, and serving as President of the Vine Ingle Little League Baseball Association. His successful career as a mortgage banker became recognized nationwide, and in the mid-1970's he was elected to serve on the Executive Committee Board of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America (MBA). He later served as MBA President in 1979 and 1980. In 1981, Sonny and Sylvia relocated to Atlanta where he served as the President of SunTrust Mortgage. He continued his service on the board of the MBA until his retirement in 1996. He and Sylvia were very active members of Sandy Springs United Methodist Church and in their DBS Sunday School class. He and Sylvia bought a second home in Blowing Rock, NC where they enjoyed mountain life and making new friends. Sonny was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at Idle Hour Country Club while in Macon, Cherokee Town and Country Club while in Atlanta, and Blowing Rock Country Club while in Blowing Rock, NC. When he was not on the golf course, Sonny could be found either at his property on the Ocmulgee River or at his family farm in Reynolds. He was also a diehard Georgia Bulldog fan and did not miss many games in Stanford Stadium until his later years. After the death of Sylvia in 2006, Sonny met and married Dr. Edwina "Wina" Gleaton. They were married in August of 2007 and moved to Marietta, GA, and they were also very active in Sandy Springs UMC. They enjoyed splitting their time between Marietta and Blowing Rock, and they also enjoyed traveling, bridge and other board/card games, and being with children and grandchildren. Sonny's passion was people. Any time he would meet someone, he had to get their "story." He wanted not just to meet somebody but to truly get to know them. This applied to everyone - his colleagues, his children's friends, his mailman, his nurses, his doctors, etc Sonny passed away on December 10, 2017 of complications from a stroke and congestive heart failure. He was preceded in death by his parents and step mother, and by his first wife, Sylvia. His greatest loves in life were his family, and he leaves behind his wife, Wina, his and Sylvia's daughter, Sandy Wilhoit, her husband Randy and their children David and his wife Ann, Chris and his wife Lauren, and Kevin; his and Sylvia's son Tommy Shealy, his wife Jan and their children Loren and Claire; and his and Sylvia's daughter Sara Ann Vaughan, her husband Woody, and their children Mathes, Sally and Ann Thomas; Wina's son Rusty Gleaton, his wife Monica and their children McKenzie, Morgan and Gray; Wina's son Davis Gleaton, his wife Jennifer and their children Carter and Ellis and Wina's daughter Stacey Whitfield, her husband Greg and their children Esco and Eva.
