Tommy Irvin Obituary
Tommy Irvin, who for years was Georgia's longest serving state official in his role as State Agriculture Commissioner, has died.
The Hall County, Ga., native, who led the agriculture department for 42 years, from 1969 until 2011, was 88.
Details about his death have not been released, but Irvin had suffered from Parkinson's disease and other ailments.
Irvin family spokeswoman Brenda James Griffin said in a statement Friday he was a "giant of a man" who leaves behind an unparalleled legacy. He is also remembered as a mentor to future Gov. Zell Miller.
