BUNN, Wallace R. Age 88 of Mountain Brook, Alabama passed away Friday, August 26, 2011, in Highlands, NC. He is survived by his wife Ann Matheson Bunn, sons Rodney Douglas Bunn, his wife Karen McGill Bunn of Johns Creek, Ga., Russell Edward Bunn, his wife JoanAnn Marie Ackerman Bunn, grandchildren Wallace Raikes Bunn III and Douglas Edward Bunn of Ravensdale, Wa. and sister Mrs. Frances Bunn Plummer of Charlotte, NC. Mr. Bunn's wife of 57 years, Margaret Seegers Bunn predeceased him in 2000. Mr. Bunn, a native of North Carolina, graduated from Harding High School in Charlotte, NC in 1941. He joined Southern Bell Telephone Co. in July of that year. He served 3 years in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He returned to Southern Bell in 1946. During his telecommunications career he served in various capacities living in 14 different cities. These included President of Pacific Northwest Bell in Seattle, Wa. and President of South Central Bell in Birmingham, Al. He was the founding Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the BellSouth Corp. in Atlanta, Ga. retiring in 1984. Mr. Bunn served on 12 corporate boards including Holiday Inns, American Business Products, Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co., ALTEC, AmSouth Bank Corporation, as well as several financial institutions in Nashville, Tn. and Seattle, Wa. Mr. Bunn participated in many community activities in each of the cities in which he served. This included President of the Chamber of Commerce in Nashville, Tn. and Seattle, Wa. He is a member of the Alabama Academy of Honor. Mr. Bunn holds honorary Doctor of Law degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Al. and William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Ms. The Wallace R. Bunn Chair of Telecommunications was created at University of Alabama Birmingham in 1988. Mr. Bunn was inducted into the Alabama Business Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Birmingham Business Hall of Fame in 1998. He is a member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church, The Country Club of Birmingham and the Rotary Club of Birmingham where he served as Poet Laureate. Following a private interment service for the family, a Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, September 1, 2011 in the sanctuary of the Mountain Brook Baptist Church located at 3631 Montevallo Road, Birmingham, Alabama. A reception in Hudson Hall will be held following the Memorial Service.
