Family-Placed Death Notice

IRVIN M. KOCH Beloved husband, Irvin M. Koch, age 58, of Lithonia, GA, died suddenly at his residence on November 18, 2005. Mr. Koch grew up in Chattanooga, TN, the son of the late Duke Bowers Koch and Shayne Statman Koch. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He earned a BS in Industrial Engineering and MS in Engineering Administration at the University of Tennessee. He was one of the founders (known as Papa Irv) of Science Fiction fandom in the Southeast and was involved with the creation of Chattacon and Deepsouthcon among other local and regional gatherings of Science Fiction enthusiasts. After working many years as an Industrial Engineer, he turned to his love of books by becoming a partner in a local book store, which led to earning his MS in Library Science from Clark Atlanta University in 2004. He worked for the Defense Technical Information Center in Washington, D.C., and at his death was employed as a librarian at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, GA. He was a member of the Georgia Conservancy, the Sherlock Holmes Club of Atlanta and the VFW. His professional memberships included SLA, Metro Atlanta Library Association, Georgia Library Association and American Library Association. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kay Pinckney of Lithonia, father and mother-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Pinckney of Jackson, GA; Aunt Margaret Oberman of NY and her children Ellen, Walter and Donald; many cousins including William Koch and Shirley Statman of NY; Carl, Larry and Marvin Koch of Nashville, TN; Jerry Koch of Houston, TX; nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, November 22 at 3:30 PM at the Jackson City Cemetery, Jackson, GA. The service will be officiated by Rabbi Albert Slomovitz and Dr. Lawrence E. Wilson. The family will receive friends from 2-3 PM in the fellowship hall of the Jackson United Methodist Church, 409 E Third St., preceding the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
