Obituary Condolences

CRUCE, Steve Steve Cruce Steve Cruce, age 84, went home to be with the Lord February 20, 2014 at his home in Lilburn. A lifetime resident of Lilburn, he was preceded by his parents, Charlie Cruce and Avis Arendell; 3 brothers, 2 sisters and 1 granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at Calvary Baptist Church, with Rev. Danny Odum, Rev. Mike Cruce and Rev. Greg Cruce officiating. Mr. Cruce will lie in state from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at the church. Burial will follow in Lilburn Memorial Gardens. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Smith Cruce; their two sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Michael (Deborah) music minister-South Carolina, Rev. Gregory (Amy), pastor Rock Bridge Baptist Church, Lilburn, grandsons, Ryan and Noah, granddaughters, Faith (husband-Shawn Bennett) and Elizabeth (husband-Jonathon Pritchard) and great grandson Aaron Pritchard. First couple married in Liberty Baptist Church, which is now, First Baptist Church Lilburn in 1951 and was a founding member Calvary Baptist Church, Lilburn. Steve held almost every position and committee plus that of deacon, choir member, only lay moderator of the Lawrenceville Baptist Association, associational clerk for 10 years, 20 years associational Brotherhood Director, RA leader, and for the last 30 years senior adult director at Calvary Baptist Church. His most enjoyable ministry was as leader of the Relatives Quartet (traditional Southern Gospel) who for over 50 years sang and entertained in prisons, nursing homes, senior adult services and churches throughout Georgia. He began work delivering blueprints on a bicycle in Atlanta. Moving into the insurance industry he rose to the position of Underwriting Manager of the Southeastern US for Safeco Insurance Company. He was the last non-college graduate hired by the company, retiring in 1991. He was the first age 17, legally admitted into the USMC (President Truman signed the bill permitting age 17 in the service the day and time he was trying to enlist per Atlanta Constitution) and was discharged with the rank of Sergeant. PTA president two terms, founded Lilburn Lions Club (3 terms as president/led them to build Lions Club Park), and organized a boys church baseball league before the days of little league.
