Family-Placed Death Notice

MARTIN, George GEORGE MOTTE MARTIN George Motte Martin, a founder of Martin-Robbins Fence Co., Inc. died Sunday, September 14, 2008, at age 96. Mr. Martin was born August 26, 1912, at The Presbyterian Mission of Luebo, Kasai District, Belgium Congo. The only child of early pioneer missionaries to Africa, Dr. Motte Martin and Bessie Sentell Martin, he lived a fascinating childhood, traveling much of the world and living in places such as the Belgium Congo, South Africa, England, and his beloved Grandfather's Louisiana plantation in Bunkie. He was full of stories of hunting game in Africa, riding horseback to school in Louisiana, of steamship travel to Europe, and of life in the remote Congo jungle mission, Luebo. Mr. Martin attended Westminster Choir College. He studied at Emory University and the University of Alabama, where he later taught mathematics, and completed his degree at Louisiana State University. A World War II veteran, Mr. Martin served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard stationed in Mobile, AL. After the war, he moved to Atlanta, GA., and became the manager of the fence department of Atlantic Steel. He co-founded Martin-Robbins in 1953, and became the sole owner in 1956. He was a devout Christian, a loving father and grandfather, and a devoted husband to his wife of 63 years, Josephine Duvic Martin, who preceded him in death in June of 2007. He is survived by his seven children: Ginger Westlund and her husband Jack of Kennesaw, GA; Betty Brown of Charlotte, NC; Ann Davis of Jackson, MS; Motte Martin and his wife Somsri of Oxford, GA; Becky Protopapadakis and her husband George of Lawrenceville, GA; Tommy Martin and his wife Charlotte of Suwanee, GA; Robbie Martin and his wife Nancy of Duluth, GA; nineteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A service celebrating the life of George Motte Martin will be held at Decatur Presbyterian Church on Friday, September 19, 2008 at 2:00 PM with interment at Decatur Cemetery. Visitation will be held at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home on Thursday, September 18, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Mr. Martin had a great heart for missions and for spreading the Gospel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Smyrna Presbyterian Church, 2920 Highway 212, SW, Conyers, Georgia 30094, designated for the Presbyterian Mission of Luebo, Congo. A. S. Turner & Sons
