Nancy Kirwan Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

KIRWAN, Nancy NANCY OWENS KIRWAN Nancy Owens Kirwan, 60, of Atlanta died in an automobile accident on Friday, September 26. She is survived by her husband, Bruce Kirwan, and their son, Patrick, who is a junior at Miami of Ohio. Nancy was born in Miami, Oklahoma and has one surviving sister, Mary Grisham of Houston, Texas. Since their marriage in 1985 the Kirwans have lived in Ansley Park, which she cherished for its sense of community. The essence of Nancy's life was giving to others. She saw the best in everyone and passionately maintained that people could be better than they ever believed possible. She always gave and never gave up. By the example of her own life, she inspired people suffering from mental illness to realize caring for others can be a healing force in itself. She fervently believed true happiness came not from wealth, power, or celebrity but from helping others. Dr. Kirwan was a clinical psychologist having received her Doctorate of Psychology from the University of Miami. Her undergraduate degree was from the University of New Mexico and she held a Masters in Psychology from Georgia State University. For the past six years of its ten year existence, Nancy served as Executive Director of the Samaritan Counseling Center of Atlanta. The Samaritan Center is a mental health counseling center founded by members and partially funded by the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta where it is located. Prior to her position at the Center she was in private practice. At the Samaritan Center, Nancy recruited a staff of a dozen psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors who are available for individual and group counseling. She counseled many of the Center's clients personally on a pro bono basis. Nancy initiated a number of programs at the Center for individuals who struggle with difficulties such as depression, cancer, addictions, troubled relationships, loss, and homelessness. Nancy was also a skilled potter whose mostly whimsical works were signed "Lillie Mae." The walls of the room where the Women's Cancer Support Group meets are adorned with ceramic plates she produced in the likeness of members who have died. Nancy also had a strong commitment to involvement in the community, which she inherited from her father, Ben Owens. She served on the Board of Directors of Paideia School in Atlanta and Camp Mishawaka in Minneapolis where she had been a camper and staff member and developed scholarships for underprivileged children. She was a long time member and Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta on Friday, October 3 at 3 pm followed by a reception at the Church. Parking is available across the street. The family will receive visitors Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Patterson's Spring Hill. Contributions in memory of Nancy Kirwan can be made to the Samaritan Counseling Center of Atlanta, 1328 Peachtree Street NE, Suite B-317, Atlanta, Georgia 30309. I am adding this in hope of contacting Nancy's family to share my memories of the pre school friendship we had. We grew up seperated by 1 city block and would play with one another at our homes. She was great with toy trucks and cowboys and Indians at my home and I enjoyed playing house with the wonderful scale model house her father build from scratch. We where a modern couple generations ahead of our time. True to form we both spent our adulthood helping others. I do miss her. Jim Burford MD

Dear Bruce and Patrick,

The few times I was able to spend with Nancy were always filled with giggles and memories which I will always cherish. We had such a great time planning her surprise visit to Joplin with Mary in 2006. Nancy and the entire Owens/Kirwan family will always have a special place in our hearts.

With deepest sympathy,
Linda Harryman

Dearest Bruce and Patrick,
Our hearts are broken for you as you struggle to see the light of Christ in this time. We have to hold on to the amazing memories of Nancy to stop the tears. At Christ the King,Nancy was always there to help in anyway with Patrick's class and the school. I sometimes volunteered "just"to be able to enjoy the Texas Sheet Cake that Nancy would bring to share. Her willingness to give of her time, smiles and hospitality will never be forgotten . Trey 's memories of times with Patrick are still talked about in our family...Kennesaw mountain hike that Nancy wanted the boys to go on,soccer games, best birthday party ever in army fatigues with dog tags and all !!!! We have all been recipients of the overflowing love of your wife and momma. Patrick, Bruce, know that each day we are lifting your broken hearts up to God ..we love you, Marci,Doc,Trey and Shockley Nunnery

Bruce and Patrick,

I am so terribly sorry to hear of this tragic and untimely loss. It was a pleasure to work with Nancy back at the Center for Interpersonal Studies. Her passion for helping others was always clear, and her soft, gentle demeanor was appreciated by everyone around her. Please accept our deepest condolences at this time. Unfortunately I will be out of town tomorrow and unable to attend the service, but my thoughts and prayers will be there with you.

Bruce and Patrick,

I'm so sorry for your loss. We've not met, but after reading the notice, your wife and mother was such a beautiful and caring person. Bruce, you and my Dad, Lin, were law school classmates and able to catch up a few weeks ago. He really appreciated the conversation. Just 14 months ago, we lost his wife and my dear mother. We understand your pain. Cherish every memory and give thanks for her wonderful life and all the moments that you shared. Time will mend your broken hearts. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Bruce and Patrick:
You have written the most beautifully moving tribute to Nancy. She is one of the people God puts on this earth to lift us all up. I remember her especially from days when Patrick was a small boy at Christ the King School. May God hold you both in the palm of His hand.

Bruce and Patrick,
I met Nancy when the two of us took our first pottery class at Callenwolde in the early 90's. I enjoyed the brief year we worked there together with our hands. I had heard through another psychologist that she had continued her work in pottery. She was the kind of person people are drawn too by her personality, commitment, and intelligence. Our community has indeed lost a very special person.

Bruce and Patrick, My heart goes out to you both. So many people will miss Nancy and what she brought to their day. I am remembering our French conversation group in the early 80s and what silliness we had. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Our prayers are with you. Patrick, I mourn the loss of your wonderful mom. She and I shared great moments together through soccer and basketball games, parties and visits to each other's houses. You remain in my memory as one of Pauli's great friends from CKS. Treasure your mom's memories. She leaves you as her greatest legacy.
