Family-Placed Death Notice

MARTIN, Roy S. Roy S. Martin, age 91, died peacefully on July 7, 2009 in the Tennessee home of his daughter, Sue, where he and his wife, Irene, had lived for the last three years. Roy was preceded in death by his other daughter, little Shirley Ellen, and is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Irene McKay Martin of Decatur, GA; his daughter, Sue Martin Gay and her husband Mike; and two grandsons, Robert and Marty. Roy is also survived by two of the eight siblings in his family, Addie Ruth Reese of Lawrenceville, GA and Louette Christopher Johnson of Norcross, GA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Roy was born in Gwinnett County, GA on December 1, 1917 to Cora Adell Davis Martin and Rance Overton Martin. He was a First Sergeant in the United States Army's Fifth Armored Division, 46th Armored Infantry Battalion during World War II, was a faithful member of the Mountain Park First Baptist Church, and was a valued 40 year employee of MARTA. After his retirement, Roy became a daily climber of Stone Mountain, logging thousands of trips. He also enjoyed helping others, starring as the Grandfather on the Cedarmont Kids video series, and helping to build mission churches. Roy is recognized by the Gwinnett Historical Society as coming from a pioneer family of Martins that settled Gwinnett County. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The Service Celebrating the Life of Roy S. Martin will be held Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel with Rev. J.B. Reese, Jr. and Rev. Dan McKay officiating. Interment Melwood Cemetery, Stone Mountain, GA. The family will receive friends on Friday from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
