Family-Placed Death Notice

CARTER, Carolyn CAROLYN McKENZIE CARTER Carolyn McKenzie Carter, age 91, of Sea Island, Georgia, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010. Mrs. Carter was a native of Moultrie, Georgia, and was a graduate of the Ward-Belmont School in Nashville, Tennessee and from the Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia. She served as staff writer and was the first female photojournalist for the Atlanta Constitution. She married her husband, Don, in 1942 and later went to work at the Journal-Constitution Sunday Magazine where she spent several years taking photographs and writing stories about the South. Mrs. Carter also worked for the Coca-Cola Company as a writer and editor for a specialized company publication prior to moving to New York in 1959. While there she was a freelance writer and photographer who promoted tourism for the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Travel. She and her husband later moved to Sea Island in 1982 where they retired and continued to be active in community, professional and travel activities. Mrs. Carter was an avid golfer who also enjoyed reading and the Theater. Reverend Bob Brearley and Dr. John Laws will conduct a memorial service on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Simons Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to St. Simons Presbyterian Church 205 Kings Way, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. Condolences may be expressed at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
