Flora Hammond Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

HAMMOND, Flora FLORA "FLO" HAMMOND Celebration of life service for Ms. Flora "Flo" Hammond, self-taught Folk Art artist, of Atlanta, GA, TODAY, February 12, 2011; 3:00 PM; The Hammond Residence, 3063 Acapulo Way, Atlanta, GA. "Flo" as she was known during early childhood, was the proud daughter of James & Juanita Reed. She grew up in Harlem and attended New York public schools. Flora recently completed coursework for a Master of Education degree from Kennesaw State University of Georgia on July 28, 2010. Flora Hammond is a self-taught artist whose style has captured the hearts of Folk Art Lovers nationwide. Her works have been featured in many exhibits throughout the United States, as well as local and national publications, Ms. Hammond's works, were highlighted as a montage during "Between the line" aired on Turner Broadcasting System. She has also worked on several mural projects in the City of Atlanta and her works in the private collections of several institutions in the Southeast. Her debut series entitled "The We Be Children Collector's Series" depicts experiences from the artist's childhood. "The children in this series are dear to me. They are extracts from my childhood memories. The time I spent with my big brother who, in my eyes, could capture rays of sun and carry the world in his wagon; girlfriends, with whom I was "tighter than tight", and still am; the secrets that were told and never revealed. "These are my children... I am they...they are me." Ms. Flora leaves to celebrate her life her loving partner, Chico Level; sister, Elizabeth Hawes; brothers, James Reed, Grover Reed, Sr. and Joseph Reed; childhood friend, Patricia Richards; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Our lives were immeasurably enriched by Flora's presence, her wit, glorious soul, kindness and beautiful smile. Willie A. Watkins Historical West End Chapel, 1003 Ralph D. I miss her cheerful smile, her radiant personality and warm spirit. She was such a fighter that fought til the very end. I loved that about her. I loved that she followed her dream of being a folk artist. Im so blessed to have many of her pieces. One that she did exclusively for me. You see, we grew up in the same neighborhood in the bronx and shared a lot of childhood memories. "We be children" when being a child was an easy simple life. The times we spent together as a child til our last visit, will forever be etched in my memory.
Love you, miss you.

My for-ever memories of Flo will be playing pool in Kansas City when we were attending training for the now defunct Airline Vanguard. I will never forget Flo singing "candlelight" by Toni Braxton. For some reason tonight Flo came to my mind, and I decided to Google Flo. I am so sad that Flo has passed, but at the same time, I am happy that she has come to visit me tonight, with such sweet memories. Flo, you will for-ever shine bright in my memories.

It always hurts the ones left behind to lose a dear friend, but we do find comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering. I cherish the times we spent together in Augusta visiting the art galleries, the times I arranged exhibitions for her at Morehouse College, Fulton County Public Library, and the Fulton County Courthouse, among many others. Her paintings I have in my home bring back all sorts of wonderful memories. Her infectious gaiety, curiosity, and friendship will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my dear friend.

I met Ms. Hammond during my brief stay at West Clayton, she was always so pleasant. I last saw her in October at my Church's family day, she shared with me the status of her health with a smile on her face and that same pleasantness. We exchanged numbers and email info, hugged each other and went on our way. I am saddened because she is gone but I know, and I pray that her family and friends will find comfort in knowing that to be abscent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Rest in Peace Flo.

My life has been enriched as a result of knowing Hammond. I met her 7years ago at West Clayton Elementary. She and I taught Kdg. She was a great teacher! Flora, you were and will always be an inspiration to me, I met you many years ago but I came to your home the weekend my 1st father died. You welcomed me into your home with open arms and made me feel that we knew each other for many years, we had so much in common. You even bought parts of me to the surface that I didn't know existed. God blessed me with the dad that I have now and the extended family, I am truly blessed to have had you for an aunt, I will take what you have been to me and cherish it until we meet again. I love you auntie Flora. God know all no matter what it is; He knows what you have been through and His will will be done. Your prize possession is with you and that is your heart. Rest in peace.

I love you Flora and I will always treasure the time that I cared for you. Your physical presence will be missed, but your sweet spirit will live with me forever. The last days that I spent with you taught me so much about life and I am forever grateful to you for the lessons learned. You have so many wonderful friends that loved you and I was blessed to encounter them as your spiritual sister and private duty nurse these last days. They now consider me a special friend for loving and caring for you. I am so grateful that you chose to love my brother "Chico" and thereby became a part of our family. It was truly my honor to take care of you as I know you would have done the same for me if I needed you. Love you forever, Jayketa

Rest in peace my dear Auntie say hello to Grandmom Elease, and Roxanne, you and I will hold true secrets to last an eternity. You are my inspiration, you always encouraged me to write my poetry, you come from a chosen generation, you endured through the ranks of this journey called life and you live in our hearts through your gift to inspire. I truly believe that the weapon that was formed against you did not posper because your destiny was sealed in heaven before the foundations of the earth. True love covers a multitude of sins and you believed in me even when I couldn't believe in myself. At our last family holiday you gave tribute to our ancestor's, and I feel you on that because true ancestors do not war we humbly accept responsiblity for our short coming's and continue to be mindful that the life we have is truly a gift from God. March on Sister Girl Into the Army of the Lord and share with our ancestor's who are covered by the blood of Jesus

My prayers and deepest sympathy go to Flora's family and Chico. Flora was a very beautiful woman inside and out. She was a big part of the West Clayton family and had been teaching there for quite some time. There will a void now that she isn't there but will forever be in our hearts. I admire Flora for her strength and realness. Flora was a beautiful spirit, and out of all the things I learned from her was strength and endurance. She put up a great fight and kept a smile on her face the whole time. I am very blessed to have worked with her and to have been able to learn from her. She taught me how to keep my plants alive and if I had a question about my plants, she'd be so excited to answer them. She may never know but from watching her she taught me about having endurance and strength. I loved her for her dedication to our school and the students. She will truly be missed at our school. I pray her family knows she is being the angel she was called to be and watching down on you all. I pray God wraps his arms around the family and Chico and mends your broken hearts. I am so thankful that Flora is at peace now with no more pain and suffering and that makes me happy even though she will be missed. I will continue to keep you all in my prayers during this difficult time. I know Flora will continue to live on through all who loved her and her memories will last forever.

fun times with Flora

My prayers are with the family of Flora and Chico. I express my deepest sympathy and pray that God wraps his arms around each and every one of you and give you peace. Flora was a very special person with a bright personality and smile. She was very unique and will be truly missed as apart of the West Clayton family. There will be a void now because she is not there. I loved Flora for her realness as well as her strength. She was a beautiful woman inside and out. I am at peace because she is now in a place with no more suffering and pain. Her body is new and she is looking down on us all, protecting us and being the angel that she was called to be. I know this is a very hard time for everyone but with God's help, we can make it. Bless the family and all who knew Flora. Her spirit will live forever in the hearts of those who loved her. The lessons she taught by her actions and her fight will remain with me. Out of all the things I learned from her was endurance, dedication and strength. She might not know how her actions played an important part on those watching. She was and is a blessing. May she rest in perfect peace and may God continue to bless the family and Chico.

To the family of Flora Hammond,

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
