HOLLIS, Michael MICHAEL R. HOLLIS Mr. Michael R. Hollis, 58, of Atlanta, passed Monday, June 18, 2012. Michael Hollis, an attorney, was best known for starting Air Atlanta, Inc., which operated from 1984 to 1987. He was a serial entrepreneur who started a number of businesses engaged in broadcasting, ownership of chain of convenience stores, investment banking, debt collection, and real estate, among others. Michael also served in a number of government positions, including Executive Director of the Virgin Island Housing Authority and as Associate Chief Counsel of the President's Commission on the Accident at Three Mile Island. Hollis' Air Atlanta was perhaps the most innovative of the more than 180 airlines, which were created in the wake of the deregulation of the U.S. aviation industry in 1978. It was aligned with Pan Am and served the southeast U.S. with ten Boeing 727's. It was the first U.S. carrier to deploy color radar in its entire fleet, which contributed to its perfect safety record. Air Atlanta, Inc., offered first class service at coach prices. Air Atlanta reconfigured its 727-100's with 88 seats compared to the industry standard of 120, served gourmet food, gave free gate side and onboard telephone service, and pioneered free newspapers among other amenities. Air Atlanta filed bankruptcy in April 1987. Hollis served as an informal political, legal, and financial adviser to a wide group of influential people across the globe. While at Dartmouth, he was a prote`ge` of John Kemeny, the President of Dartmouth, who was a colleague of Albert Einstein. His early efforts during the New Hamphire Primary on behalf of Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter greatly assisted the campaign. While at the University of Virginia School of Law, he was the President of the Law Student Division of the American Bar Association. He served on a number of boards including, Grady Hospital, Emory University, and Atlanta University. Funeral services for Mr. Michael R. Hollis, will be held Monday, June 25, 2012; 10:30 A.M. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 400 Auburn Avenue Atlanta, Georgia 30312. Reverend Dr. Raphael G. Warnock, Pastor officiating. The remains will be placed in state at 9:30 A.M. Emtombment Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia R. Hollis; brother, James B. Arnold, III; sister, Ruth E. Hollis; and nephew, Jaison-Matthew C. Hollis. His memories will be remembered and cherished by a host of family and friends, including his wife, Dena Freeman Hollis, of Chicago, Illinois; sisters, Virginia E. Hollis, Joan Hollis Mitchell (Sylvester); brothers, Julius H. Hollis (Jeanne) and Flem H. Hollis (Dorothy); cousin, Victor Thomas; nieces and nephews, Willetta Hollis Brown, Deborah Mitchell, Hollie N. Hollis, LeAnn P. Arnold, Kristy M. Arnold, Christiana M. Hollis, Kara M. Hollis, Andrew S. Hollis, and Flem H. Hollis, III. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the church at 10:00 A.M. Donald Trimble Mortuary, Inc., 1876 Second Avenue (404) 371-0772-3.
