Milton A. Carlton, Sr., 91, of St. Simons Island passed away on December 2, 2005. Born in 1913 to educator-parents, he grew up in Canton, Waycross and Cochran, Georgia, and in Mexico, Missouri. He was a graduate of Middle Georgia College and of Atlanta Law School. He practiced law in Millen, Georgia, from 1936 to 1954, interrupted by World War II and the Korean Conflict. In 1954, he joined the Swainsboro firm Price, Spivey & Carlton and pursued his career as a lawyer with distinction until his retirement in 1958 to St. Simons Island. He was active in civic, professional and religious affairs, serving as chairman of the boards of deacons of the Millen and Swainsboro Baptist churches, president of the Millen and Swainsboro Rotary clubs, judge of the Millen City Court, member of the Georgia State Senate and floor leader of that body, chairman of the State Scholarship Commission and its companion the Georgia Higher Education Assistance Corporation, and a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. In later years he taught Sunday school and sang in the choir of the St. Simons United Methodist Church and instructed at Elderhostel. He frequently recalled his wartime experiences as combat intelligence officer of an Army Air Corp fighter-bomber group in the European theater during WWII and later as an Air Force psychological warfare officer during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by Billie Hatcher Carlton, his beloved wife of 68 years, his son and daughter-in-law, Milton Carlton, Jr. and Leslie; three grandsons, Jason (Jennifer), Eric (Sara) and Price (Brenda) Carlton; and 5 great-granddaughters in whom he took great pleasure, Neal, Alia, Nicole, Trevi and Eva Grace Carlton. He is also survived by a sister, Ruth Carlton Browne of Cincinnati, the last of six siblings. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 7 at 2 p.m. in the chapel at St. Simons United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church at 624 Ocean Boulevard, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
