Family-Placed Death Notice

BABBITT, III, Earl Earl LeRoy Babbitt, III, 56, of Atlanta, died at Hospice Atlanta Center on February 13, 2013, after a 14-month battle with cancer. He was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, where he attended Monte Sano Elementary, Tubman Junior, and Richmond Academy. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of Order of the Arrow with Vigil Honor. He worked summers in the family plumbing business before moving to Atlanta to enter Georgia Tech in 1974. As a student, he pledged Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, which he served as an organization advisor for many years after graduation. He began working at Georgia Tech through the co-op program, then left school to work full-time in the Office of the Registrar. He attended Georgia State University at night and received his bachelor's degree in 1986. He retired from Georgia Tech in 2012 after 33 years of employment there, most recently in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, having obtained the Georgia Tech Master's Degree he so desired in 2003. He was a talented and respected softball player, an avid enthusiast and supporter of the space program, and a compassionate Keeshond rescuer. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Stephanie Staples Babbitt; parents, Earl L. Babbitt, Jr., and George Ann Penton Babbitt, of Augusta; sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and Warren Anderson, of Madison, AL; nieces, Jessi Anderson Evans (Sean), Katie Anderson, and Kelsey Anderson; a great-nephew and great-niece; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and loyal friends. The body was cremated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 12:00 noon, at Floral Hills Funeral Home in Tucker, GA, with a reception following. The family asks that his friends wear informal clothes in cheerful colors, particularly Georgia Tech white and gold, to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Earl's memory to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, Eureka Springs, AR 72632. Arrangements by Floral Hills Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Tucker (770) 491-3021.
