BENK, Dr. Joel R. DR. JOEL R. BENK Dr. Joel R. Benk passed away on the morning of May 14th, 2014. He is survived by his wife Debbie Benk and four children, Joshua Benk (Nicole), Eva Sales (Trevor), Jessica Benk, Ryan Benk and one grandchild. He was born 11 August 1953 in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating high school and attending two colleges in New York he transferred to the University of Florida where he received his Bachelor of Science. In 1980, Dr. Benk graduated the prestigious Emory University Dental School in Atlanta where he earned his DDS degree and later served as a faculty member. For over 3 decades he has been practicing dentistry in the Atlanta area. He's also a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and was certified by the MISCH International Implant Institute. Dr. Benk was internationally recognized as a teacher in the CEREC 3D method, an extremely advanced technology for creating lifelike ceramic tooth restorations. He has personally trained hundreds of dentists on how to get optimum cosmetic outcomes for their patients with ceramic restorations. And he's published many articles in professional dental publications on achieving excellent clinical results using CEREC 3D. Dr. Benk has written articles for Dentistry Today and Contemporary Esthetics, sharing his knowledge and insights with other dentists. This includes an award-winning article published in 2006 on the use of techniques for dental injections that are comfortable. Dr. Benk has also been featured in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Intown, Atlanta Magazine, Atlanta Dentist and Dental Life. He has been at the forefront of cosmetic dentistry since 1980 and has treated thousands of cases. He equipped his office with the latest in technology to provide all of the high-tech cosmetic dentistry procedures available today. Dr. Benk has been the on-call dentist for over two decades at the historic Fox Theatre, one of Atlanta's premiere venues for live entertainment. Over the years he has treated cast members in headline productions such as Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Stomp and The Lion King. He has also treated multiple professional athletes including competitors in the Centennial Olympics and players for the Atlanta Falcons. Dr. Benk was a proud member of multiple dental groups including: the American Dental Association, Northern District Dental Society, The Academy of Computerized Dentistry and the Georgia Dental Association. In 2007 he spoke to over eighteen hundred doctors and staff in Las Vegas about advanced cosmetic dentistry. He always believed in giving back to his community. He was a sponsor for The Way to Happiness, the Citizen's Commission on Human Rights, the Foundation for a Drug Free World, and the Concerned Businessman Association of America. He was passionate as a drug prevention activist helping to curb soaring prescription drug abuse by making the Truth About Drugs available to colleagues, educators and law enforcement professionals. Seeing the program's effectiveness, he disseminated it to those who deal with drug abuse and provide drug prevention professionally-local police departments, school systems and drug courts. Dr. Joel Benk cherished his family, children and grandchild. Besides his love for dentistry, he enjoyed traveling, skiing, fishing, boating and supporting his community. He was a very enthusiastic and passionate man who brought life and happiness to those around him. The test of a life well-lived is answered by asking two questions: Did he do what he intended? and, We're people glad that he lived? Dr. Joel Benk answered those questions in a truly stellar fashion and will be sincerely remembered by family, friends and his community. Memorial Services will be held at a later date. I was deeply saddened last year to hear this news. On my first visit to his office, I felt it was like a spaceship with all the high-tech stuff and knew I had landed in the right spot. I was always impressed with Dr. Benk's gentle manner and the absolute professionalism of his staff. I never experienced any pain or swelling during or after my visits despite extensive work, and he referred me to another stellar colleague when needing an in-hospital procedure. His achievements speak for themselves. He was a light for his profession, a gentle dentist and gentleman. He holds a special place in my heart, and I miss him.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Benk. It was very difficult to learn of his passing, I know it happened a few weeks ago. I met Dr. Benk a few years ago at a dental meeting and have since been in contact with him regularly regarding his CE credits and courses, and I remember him as a very polite and kind person, always with a smile and always surprised when he asked if I remembered him (I travel quiet a bit and meet many drs at meetings). I just spent some time on the phone with him back in April... I am truly sorry, sending his loved ones sincere blessings

Amazing individual, phenomenal family man, gifted dentist, and a shining example to those who crossed paths with him. I was shocked to learn of Dr. Benk's passing during my appointment today. I have been a patient of his since the '80s and after all those years I thought of him as a friend and not just my dentist. He was always encouraging and supportive of all of my academic endeavors as well as personal and professional accomplishments. The Bible records that David was a man after God's own heart, and I would say that the life that Dr. Benk led and his commitment to bettering the lives of those whom he shared time and space with makes him a man after the very heart of God as well. Dr. Benk you will be missed, but to be absent from the body is to be present with God. To Debbie and the children, my prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Love, Peace & Blessings,

I began seeing Dr. Benk in 1986 when I move to Atlanta as a college student. Back then, I had little money. He worked with me and provided me a great smile which gave me more confidence.

He was always willing to go the extra mile for his patients. I remember him coming into the office on a late Sunday afternoon to help me after a sports related injury.

Rest in Peace Dr. Benk!

I have been a patient and friend of Dr. Benk since 1986. In 2011 we celebrated our 25th association anniversary and I recall his smile and gentle touch. My heart is heavy right now and I can not believe he is gone. Debbie, my prayers are with you and the family. I know how much you supported him and how much you shared. My daughters are his patients as well and its as if they have lost an uncle. A visionary has left us but his memory will live on in the many lives he touched through his dental ministry. He and I bantered every time I came into the office. He was always quick to ask about "me" and that personal touch will stay with me forever. Rest in peace my friend and know that you will be missed!

Joel was my dentist about 30 years ago and I was saddened to learn of his passing. I was a recent Georgia Tech grad with my first job, and he was a nearby dentist who was recommended. I had many hours in his chair. He did a LOT of work on my sad teeth in my early20's and did quite a fine job at that, as most of it still is serving me well. I remember Debbie working in the office and hearing of the births of the babies. Such a friendly and kind man! Both of you! I moved to the burbs and got married, had a job out of downtown, and so it was time to find a new dentist, who he probably recommended to me. I remember him encouraging me after my marriage to have lots of kids, they were wonderful, he loved his family so much. Far too young to leave behind his legacy. Reading his story was very inspiring, to hear how he has helped others and been a leader in his field. May the God of all comfort wrap his loving arms around you and his memory work good in this world.

I moved to Atlanta in March 1982 and was looking for a dentist. I found Dr. Joel Benk, and I have been his patient for over thirty years. Dr Benk is a knowledgeable, caring, and dedicated professional. I have been married now for 26 years and he has provided dental services for not only me, but by wife Catherine, and our two children, Veronica & Aaron.
In addition to providing excellent dental care for me and my family, he supported my little baseball teams and high school marching band programs over the years.
Dr. Benk will surely be missed by many, but his dedication to his dental practice, philanthropy and those he taught will serve as rich legacy that will continue to keep his memory alive for years to come.
It is my prayer that God's grace will provide the Benk family with the strength to see you through this difficult time of sorrow and grief, due the passing of your loved one.
Respectfully,

Joel was a stellar achiever in every aspect of his life. An adjective that so well describes Joel is dedication, dedication to his family, to his church, to his profession, to his friends. All who knew Joel knew that he not only achieved, he shared. He shared not only his financial resources, but his time to make sure that others could achieve as well.
