Charles SMITH Obituary

SMITH, Charles CHARLES P. SMITH Celebration of life Service for Charles P. Smith will be held Monday June 16, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Maranatha Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2730 Brownsmill Rd. SE. Atlanta, GA. Interment Georgia National Cemetery Canton, GA. There will be no viewing. Charles Patrick Smith, Sr., departed this life on June 7, 2014 at the Briarcliff Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Smith was born on March 18, 1931 in New Orleans, LA, the youngest of three sons born to Curtis Lawrence and Mary Inez Smith. He was educated at the prestigious Gilbert Academy (high school), Grambling State (B.S. Degree) and Bowie State, Bowie, MD (M.S. Degree). He served his country proudly in the USAF during the Korean War. Mr. Smith began his professional career in the Red River Parish, La. School System as a teacher, coach and assistant principal. He relocated to Washington, D.C. where at various stages he served as coach, Athletic Director, assistant principal and principal in the D.C. Public School System for 26 years. Mr. Smith is an ordained elder of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church where he has worshipped for 54 years. Mr. Smith is survived by his beloved and loving wife, Mary Moore Smith, two loving daughters, Sonja Smith, College Park, and Ne'koena Gittens and husband Shaun, Jonesboro. Two devoted sons, Charles P. Smith, Jr. and wife Joanna, Conyers and Wayne Fowler, Oakland, CA; four grandchildren, Naomi and Charles Devin Smith, his "'lil', 'lil', 'lil' boy", Donovan Gittens and Stephon Fowler; an indispensable niece-in-law, Mrs. Lula Thomas, Shreveport, LA; two nieces, three nephews, two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, other family, friends and the Maranatha Church family. The family expresses its sincere appreciation to the staffs of Southern Crescent LTC and Briarcliff Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center for their sensitivity and care during Mr. Smith's stay at these facilities.
