AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Saturday, June 11, 2011 at his residence, Benjamin Fraser Moss, Jr., M.D., 88, husband of 37 years to Jayne Q. Moss. Dr. Moss, the son of the late Benjamin Fraser Moss, Sr. and Norma Aaron Moss was a native and lifelong resident of Augusta. He graduated from the Academy of Richmond County, Junior College of Augusta, attended the University of Georgia, and graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1951 with a Medical Degree. He did a rotating internship at Spartanburg General Hospital and his Residency at University Hospital in Neuropsychiatry. Dr. Moss was full time faculty at the Medical College of Georgia from July 1955 until June 1956. He was in private practice in Psychiatry and EEG with Doctors Hervey Cleckley, Corbett Thigpen, Jere Chambers and Seaborn McGarity from June 1956 until July 1996. Dr. Moss was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He was active staff at University Hospital in Psychiatry and EEG, Chief of Psychiatry from 1975 to 1977 and courtesy staff at St. Joseph's Hospital and Doctors Hospital until his retirement in 1996. Dr. Moss served during World War II in the United States Army Air Corp. from 1942 until 1946. Dr. Moss was a member of numerous professional organizations including Richmond County Medical Society, Tenth Georgia Congressional District Medical Society, Medical Association of Georgia, American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, Southern Medical Association, Southern EEG Society and Georgia Psychiatric Association. He was also a member of Johns S. Davidson Lodge, Pine Grove United Methodist Church of Lincolnton and a member of the Augusta Country Club. Dr. Moss enjoyed music especially Pops, Standards and Jazz and played electric guitar in Code 99 Band. He also enjoyed the many years he spent at Clark Hill Lake with his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Family members in addition to his wife include his children: Lynn M. Norvell, Susan M. Bass (Bill) and Ben F. Moss, III (Patricia) all of Augusta; six grandchildren Ben F. Moss IV, Austin M. Moss, Elizabeth N. Moss, Leigh T. Sundem, Scott A. Sundem, Jr., and Katherine F. Norvell; nephews and niece Benny Kinsey, Jimmy Kinsey, David Kinsey and Martha Kinsey; and his loving dog Mattie. He was preceded in death by his sister Elizabeth Kinsey. The family will receive friends today, Monday, June 13, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors on Davis Road. A private family committal will be held at a later date.
