Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

Bernie was my brother-in-law. I married his brother, Frances Edward (Frank) in 1941. Frank and I had six children. Bernie, his lovely wife Lois, and their son Bernard shared many visits with our family over the years. The times we all spent together are blessed memories. Bernie achieved a lot in his life, and I am honored to have shared the Scherer name. Bernie is reunited with Lois, his mother, father, sisters and all of his brothers now. This give me peace. Till we can all be together again, I will remain your sister-in-law.

Bernie Sherer was one of the nicest men I never got to met, but I had the privilege of talking to him many times on the phone. He was the best friend of my late father-in-law, Sam Francis, a fellow Nebraska great, and his beloved Lois and my mother-in-law, were best of friends. Today marks the 2nd anniversary of Sam's passing, so Bernie is in all our hearts today especially. After Sam's death, Bernie never failed to call Lyn every month to check on her, give her words of encouragement and generally lift her spirits. His calls were always the highlight of our days. Although I never met him, he was one of the kindest, sweetest spirits I have ever encountered. We just learned of his passing recently, and our thoughts and prayers are with all of his family and friends. I have no doubt that he was welcomed to a special Nebraska section of heaven by Sam and all the other great Huskers who have gone before him.

GO HUSKERS!!!!

As a child I remember being in awe of uncle Bernie's size. As an adult I came to admire him for all he accomplished in his life. To ease my sorrow I feel comfort in knowing that Uncle Bernie and my dad are somewhere passing the old football back and forth. My dad, his older brother was so proud of him as we all were and are still. Memories are gifts they leave us.

Although I only had the opportunity to meet Uncle Bernie just a couple of times in my life, he and his life's achievements meant a tremendous amount to me personally...I had nothing but the utmost respect for the man. Because of him, my grandfather (his brother Frances Edward) and my father (Paul Leon Scherer)...I hold my head up high and am proud to be a member of the Scherer family. You will live in my memories...god bless!

BERNIE LOVED THE NEBRASKA CLUB OF THE SUN CITIES TUESDAY MORNING BREAKFASTS. VERY OFTEN HE BROUGHT ARTICLES HE OR OTHERS HAD WRITTEN ABOUT POLITICAL ISSUES OF THE DAY AND HAD VERY DEFINITE OPINIONS OF WHO SHOULD BE ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. BERNIE WAS A REAL GENTLEMEN - LOVED TO VISIT WITH ANYONE, PARTICULARLY THOSE WHO WORKED AS SERVICE PEOPLE AT THE RESTAURANT. NEBRASKA PLAYED IOWA (FOOTBALL) IN 1934 AT LINCOLN WHICH I WATCHED FROM THE KNOT-HOLE SECTION, AT A COST OF TEN CENTS. BERNIE PLAYED WELL(I WAS ONLY TEN YEARS OLD) BUT HE ALWAYS ENJOYED HEARING THAT STORY. MANY TIMES HE TOLD US HOW LUCKY HE WAS TO HAVE MARRIED LOIS. WONDERFUL GUY - WE WILL MISS HIM.

I got to know Bernie when he was able to attend the weekly men's breakfast of the Nebraska Club of the Sun Cities. He was an avid Big Red fan and we enjoyed hearing many stories of his football days with the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Green Bay Packers. We will miss him greatly.

I met Bernie through my work for the University of Nebraska, but on the very first visit, he became to me a good friend and not just a business client. I know how much he enjoyed and thought of family and his close friends in Sun City. I also know how anxious he was to be reunited with Lois once again. I will miss my visits with Bernie.
