Maria Theresa "Terry" Velasquez, 85 of Tempe, AZ (formerly of Gila Bend, AZ) Servant of Christ, passed into eternal life on February 5, 2013. Greeting her at heaven's gate: parents Tom and Angelina Windham, twin brother Charles M. Windham, husband Jose A. Velasquez, and son John Velasquez.
Terry was born on May 27, 1927 in Tucson, Arizona. She was raised and attended school in Tucson, including Tucson High School. Because education was always important to Terry she attended Glendale Community College as an adult. Terry and Joe sent all three children to Arizona universities. Two obtained degrees from Arizona State University and one from the University of Arizona.
Terry had several careers during her life. She worked at New Art Photo Lab (Tucson) as a young woman. She and Joe moved to Gila Bend, Arizona not long after their marriage in 1948. Terry worked as a practical nurse for the local doctor where she managed the office and helped with patients. She then worked as a bookkeeper for several companies. Terry worked for the Town of Gila Bend as Town Clerk for nineteen years, retiring in the mid 1990's. Terry was a member of the Arizona Municipal Clerks Association and was accredited as an International Municipal Clerk. She was also a notary public and a voter registrar.
Terry was involved in St. Michael's parish in Gila Bend. She and Joe headed up the Charity and Development Appeal Drive several times. She also led the Religious Education for the children of the parish.
Terry enjoyed music, singing, dancing, reading, and was a life-long learner. Terry was strong, intelligent, compassionate, optimistic, involved in her community, and devoted to her family. Those left to cherish her memory: son Charles (wife Donna), daughter Carol, grandsons Charles R. (wife Amber) and James J. Velasquez, Janet E. (wife of son John), grandsons Jonathan J. and Jeffrey J. Velasquez, and great-grandchildren Charlie and Katelyn Velasquez, many nieces and nephews, as well as her much loved dog Belle.
Services will be held on February 23, 2013 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Tempe Arizona at 10 am (rosary immediately prior to mass at 9:45); reception to follow at church social hall. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to Banner Alzheimer's Institute or .
