Sarah Grant Obituary

Judge Sarah Dickinson
Grant

Judge Sarah Dickinson Grant, 73, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at her home in Phoenix. Sarah was born November 10, 1942 in El Dorado, Kansas. She moved to Austin, Texas as a teenager where she graduated from McCallum High School. Sarah received her undergraduate degree from UCLA and after graduation worked as a social worker at Harbor General Hospital in Los Angeles. Her work there cemented her desire to work in public service and help others by attending law school. Sarah was one of two women in the first graduating class of Arizona State University School of Law. After law school, Sarah served as a judge on the Maricopa County Superior Court from 1979 to 1982 and then as a judge on the Arizona Court of Appeals until 1999. She was deeply committed both to achieving justice and to opening greater opportunities for women in the legal field. Even after her retirement, Sarah maintained her profound intellectual curiosity, studying subjects as varied as Buddhism and quantum physics. She never stopped reading and learning.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her two daughters, who followed her into the practice of law, and their husbands: Trevi Grant and Bob Murphy of Phoenix and Ashley Grant and Scott Cavanaugh of Easthampton, Massachusetts; and her five grandchildren: Isabelle, Sophie & Claire Harris and Lyla & Ezra Grant Cavanaugh. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Anne and John Davidson of Terrell, TX; brother Edward (Dick) Dickinson of Lexington, KY and many friends and legal associates. The family wishes to especially thank Patricia Coronado, Sarah's close friend and caregiver, for her years of kind service.

A public remembrance will be held Friday, May 6th at 3:00 o'clock at the Arizona Court of Appeals, 1501 W. Washington Street, 2nd Floor Phoenix, AZ 85007. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Law School's Schroeder Public Interest Prize through Arizona State University, (480) 965-6468.

Judge Grant was a wonderful inspiration to me as a young lawyer. She showed an immediate interest in me and was encouraging of my career, offering practical advice regarding how a woman should carry herself in the profession. She was an incredibly lovely woman.

My condolences to those who loved her.

Judge Grant was one of my earliest, and best, role models. She was a committed professional, who was also elegant and stylish. She made a point of staying physically fit, and she was practically always in good spirits. She led the way for young female lawyers in Arizona by encouraging and supporting strong scholarship, creativity and sisterhood. One other thing I learned during my year as her judicial clerk: keeping a stash of good chocolate candy around is very important. She sure did love her chocolate! My sincere condolences to the family for the loss of your loved one. May she rest in peace.
