Swanston, William Doyle
age almost 85 of Fargo, ND and Scottsdale, AZ headed to the 19th hole in the sky on Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Known as Bill or Swanny to his friends, he passed away after a life of love, family, business and golf. Bill was born March 14, 1928 to William Michael and Kathleen Clare (Doyle) Swanston. Bill leaves his three (all his favorite) sisters, Maggie (Bill) Brown, Elizabeth Ann Ostby, and Mary Kay (Don) Carlson/Gronbeck. He was a veteran of the Army, a graduate of North Dakota State University and a successful businessman (Swanston Equipment Company).

Bill was a scratch golfer for much of his life. He won many tournaments including the North Dakota State Amateur. With partners, he developed Oxbow Country Club, a Robert Trent Jones course near Fargo. He was a booster of the game of golf. He was commended for his thirty years of service on the USGA Rules Committee. He was a founding member of Pinnacle Peak Country Club in Scottsdale and served on the Greens Committee for many years.

Bill loved his family. He is survived by his beautiful wife Kathy, his 3 children, Robin Swanston Ray, Mike Swanston (Linda Finsness), and Kelly Swanston Woudenberg (Dana Woudenberg). He was a loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather.

Swanny will be remembered as a fierce competitor, a creative businessman and a good friend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Bill's name to either Hospice of Red River Valley, 1701 38th Street South, Suite 101, Fargo, ND 58103, or FM Junior Golf/North Dakota Open Foundation, 509 26th Avenue South, Fargo, ND 58103. There will be a celebration of Swanny's life on Sunday, March 10th from 5-7PM at Pinnacle Peak Country Club, 8701 East Pinnacle Peak Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85255.
