Frank Bailey Obituary

Bailey, Colonel Frank Donald (Ret.)
91, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully in Paradise Valley, Arizona, on October 4, 2014.
He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 26, 1922, to Waldmar Francis and Cassandra Debenham Bailey. He married Cleo Marie Hurst on June 12, 1946 in the Salt Lake City, Utah, temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in journalism.
He had an outgoing personality and made friends wherever he went. He had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and was an inspiration to many.
Frank was one of the "Greatest Generation." He served proudly in World War II in the United States Army Air Corp as a navigator and bombardier flying in a B-17. He was shot down over Germany in 1944 and was a POW for the remainder of the war. He was later recalled into the military and served in the United States Air Force for 30 years before retiring in 1973 from his last station at Vandenberg AFB, California.
Frank was a tireless worker and took on many jobs after retiring. He served as campaign manager for Orrin Hatch leading up to Senator Hatch's first election to the U.S. Senate in 1976. He served from 1977 to 1980 as Mission President in the Ohio Columbus Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Cleo. They loved their missionaries. Frank later retired from Blaine Hudson Printing in Salt Lake City. Frank and Cleo moved from Utah to Arizona in 1993 where he continued to work as a church service missionary for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Cleo Hurst Bailey, and five sons and one daughter: Stanley (Linda), Michael (Glorianne), Brent (Janet), Brian (Jodi), Wade (Merri), and Carla (Kent) Ipson, and one sister, Annette Ingersoll. He has 24 granchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Rex and Ralph Bailey, two sisters, Barbara Hales and Margene Bagley, and one great-grandson, Joshua Ipson.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Greenway Ward chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 4242 East Waltann Lane in Phoenix, Arizona. A viewing will be held
from 9-10 am just before the funeral. There will be a graveside service held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park located at 3401 South Highland Drive in Salt Lake City, Utah.

We think of President Bailey often. He was a great mission president. This is a picture of the sisters in the Ohio Columbus Mission right after he and Sister Bailey came.

We would like to send our condolences to the family. It was our pleasure to have some association with Frank for a few years when the family lived in the Mt. Olympus Stake. He was a good man with wisdom and common sense. We enjoyed knowing him.

Uncle Don was a great and good man. Always modest and self-effacing, he was one of the smartest and ablest people the "Greatest Generation" ever produced. Among my various aunts and uncles on the Bailey side, Don was the Atticus Finch of the bunch; solid, steady, and unwavering. My condolences to my cousins and Aunt Cleo.

Dear Cleo,
Horst and Helga will welcome him with open arms. They loved you both so much - you made them feel a part of things as strangers in a strange land. Thank you for your friendship to them. We are so sorry for your loss.
Love,

Truly one of the great and noble has been called home, but not before leaving this world a better place. His example, his testimony, his very presence encouraged me to be better than I was. Tears of gratitude well in my eyes whenever I think of President Bailey and I thank Heavenly Father for the privilege of having known him.

President had an insatiable appetite for Wendy's hamburgers and frostys. One occasion I was working through lunch at the mission office, the other elders having left to eat, and President entered and asked if I would like to go with him to Wendy's. He then retracted and said, "Oh, you ate there yesterday, didn't you? You probably wouldn't want to go today." I assured him I eat there two days in a row. His eyes brightened and an expression similar to that of child who had just been told he could have any toy in the store covered his face! "Really??!!" he exclaimed clapping his hands together, "Great! Let's go!!!"

Heartfelt thanks to you President & Sister Bailey!

Sure love ya!!!

Sister Bailey, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I will never forget the Sunday that President Bailey talked about the atonement and then passed the Sacrament to us. It was a moment of awakening for me. I often remember it when I am taking the Sacrament. And I remember the lighter side too. I remember a Christmas when someone made a joke, it had to do with Sister missionaries. It was funny, and he laughed and laughed. He is a good man. We love you and hope to see you soon, Sister Cathy (Sabbe) Winward

Dear Sister Bailey,

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time of separation. I know how much you love President Bailey because that love was evident as I served as one of your missionaries in the Ohio Columbus Mission. I know that your heart aches now, but I also know your dear husband will be waiting for you on the other side of the veil and that he is in the arms of loving friends and relatives and a loving Savior. As Elder Nelson expressed, "We can't fully appreciate joyful reunions later without tearful separations now. The only way to take sorrow out of death is to take love out of life."

I hope you know how much I loved and admired your husband and you as I served my mission. He was such a great teacher and mentor and he led by example. He helped me build a foundation for my life that was centered on the atonement of Jesus Christ and I will be forever grateful to both of you.

I pray the Holy Spirit will be with you and comfort you and your family. I hope you know how much you are loved. Thank you again for all the service you and your husband provided to me during my mission.

Love,
John Hulme
