JOE EBERSON Obituary

JOE TONI GERHARDUS EBERSON Flew west on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at 1715 to join his Heavenly Father. Joe was born on November 26, 1931 at Bilthoven, Holland to Joseph M. A. Eberson and Catharine J. E. Eberson. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Florence N. Laurens-Eberson. They shared 29 years of happy marriage together. Joe has 5 children from his first marriage; Joe M. T. (Sue) Eberson, Marianne M. E. (Ron) Riales, Sven I. (Sandra) Eberson, Anitra D. (David) Bryant and Cole E. (Ann) Eberson. Florence has 4 children; Janine F. Weber, Marjan M. (Tom) Polek, Charlotte E. (Kelly) Loomer and J. Eric Weber. Together they have 24 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Marjorie H. Wolf and his only brother, Sirocco J. Eberson. At an early age, Joe was fascinated by airplanes and decided to become a pilot. After graduating from college, he joined the Netherlands Air Force in 1950. The USAF provided the Pilot Training in the United States and Joe graduated September 13, 1952 at Craig AFB, Alabama. Joe served five years in NATO, transferred this commission to the USAF in 1956, as a jet-pilot instructor, and served at various other squadron assignments; returning to Phoenix in 1960, Joe joined the Arizona Air National Guard, flying C-97s in a world-wide mission. After the Guard changed to a refueling mission, he left the Guard with the rank of Major. As a week-end warrior, Joe had an opportunity to start his insurance agency for State Farm in March 1960, and has operated this agency for 51 years in Phoenix. Joe was always grateful for the opportunities the United States offered him and he served in his community, as president and member of the Phoenix Elementary School Board #1, was a member of the Boy Scouts of America Theodore Roosevelt Council and Institutional Representative for many years. He is a member of the Desert Foothills United Methodist Church. With other Dutch immigrants, he helped start the Netherlands Business Association of Arizona, first as a member and later as President. Besides flying, Joe enjoyed travelling, camping, hunting, skiing, scuba diving and hiking. The Eberson family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Cancer Treatment Center of America for their excellent treatment and personal care during Joe's courageous 2 ½ year battle with pancreatic cancer. Funeral Services will be held 10:00am, Saturday, September 1, 2012 at Central United Methodist Church, 1875 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85004. Immediately following the Funeral Service, the Eberson family will greet all guests in Kendall Hall at the church. Interment will be held 1:00pm, Saturday, September 1, 2012 at City of Mesa Cemetery, 1212 N. Center St., Mesa, AZ 85201 where Military Honors will be provided by the United States Air Force Honor Guard. I was sorry to hear about Joe's passing. My condolences to the family. I met Joe in 1971 when he became my insurance agent. I've had insurance with Joe for more than 40 years. He was a great man and it was my privelege to know him and talk to him over the years. It was mostly about insurance but he did tell me about his life in Holland and some of the adventures he had. He will be missed by all who knew him. R.I.P. Joe!

Dear Florence and Eberson Family,

Joe was my first flight instructor when I was a young second lieutenant going through primary pilot training in 1957-58 at Malden Air Base, Missouri. He was also my neighbor in that small community. His son, Joey, would come over and play in our yard. Joe's patience with me in the small T-34 training plane contributed immensely to my eventual graduation from pilot training and completion of a near 26-year career in the United States Air Force. Years later, I ran into Joe again, at the First Congregational Church in Phoenix. One evening, Joe and I flew around in a light aircraft taking in Phoenix sights and reminiscing. On another memorable occasion, we lunched together at a meeting of the Order of Daedalians, a fraternal group of military pilots meeting at Luke Air Force Base. Joe was a real mentor to me and I know he will be missed by all of you. God bless!

Dear Florence and family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all in these sad days as you share many fond memories of Joe, a friend and associate of many throughout the years. We enjoyed many get togethers at our Dutch Club, and Joe played an important role as one of the founding members. He will be missed by many, and especially by his loved ones who shared his final battle.

August 29, 2012

Florence,
We are so very sad to learn of Joe's passing. Jetty called us. What a loss for each of you who so dearly loved this gentle man. But he was a brave warrior, too, fighting his last battle with great strength and dignity and courage - much the way he probably lived his life. We will remember him as one of our first friends from the Dutch Club, who, with you, always went out of his way to greet us and befriend us. As we got to know you and Joe better, we came to know him as a very sincere, kind, and genuinely nice person, whom we grew to like very, very much. How could you not? But, there is more we came to know about him. Certainly a man of business success, but also a person of patience and dignity, gentleness and kindness. We are so sorry, Flo, for you. Know we are here for you. Our heartfelt condolences to you and all the family. Sincerely, Henk and Sandy

We met Joe as a strong, handsome, healthy man who was always jogging through the neighborhood. As we got to know him one realized what a thoughtful person he was, how much he contributed to the community and what a wonderful love story he had with his wife, Florence. Joe will be missed by many and our prayers are with Florrie and their family.
