Henry J. "Hank" Brown Obituary
Brown, Henry J. "Hank"
Brown, Henry J. "Hank", 89 of Phoenix, passed away on April 3, 2014 in Glendale, AZ. He had battled the symptoms of Parkinson's for the past 5 years. Complications, related to other health issues, became too great, and he died peacefully in the early morning. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Pat Brown of Phoenix, AZ and his daughter Suzanne "Sue" Ford of Washington state. Henry was born in Rend, Illinois on April 25, 1924 to Henry Clay Brown and Anna May Hall Brown. His father was a coal miner. Life wasn't easy in southern Illinois coal mining country and opportunities were limited. At 18, he enlisted in the Army and left the familiar faces of his rural community to travel far away to the trenches of Luzon in the Philippines. There he served in the Army Combat Infantry in the Southwest Pacific Theater of WWII. He contracted malaria during that time and was sent to Guadalcanal to recover, and then back into combat. He fought bravely receiving: 2 Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and a Purple Heart for injuries he received while on Luzon. Sadly, as often happens, these memories haunted him for the rest of his life. He was a hard worker and worked many years for Greyhound Lines, Inc.. He retired from Greyhound in 1986. He loved helping others and was often found mowing a neighbor's lawn. He was known for his sense of humor. You couldn't help but laugh when you saw how much he enjoyed his own jokes. He leaves behind 2 sons, 2 stepdaughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and his sister-in-law and good friend Delpha Jean Brown of Akin, Ill. He will be greatly missed. We are very grateful for the wonderful care he received at White Dove Carehome in Glendale, AZ. We are also grateful to Hospice of the Valley for the excellent care and treatment they provided. Graveside services, with military honors, and inurnment will take place at Resthaven Cemetery in Glendale, AZ, on April 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by Advantage Maryvale Funeral Home.
