Fibel, Herbert Spencer
of Tempe, attorney, passed away Jan 2, 2014. Born Nov 4,1930 in New York City and raised in New Rochelle NY. As a boy he was involved in Boy Scouts achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow. He graduated Cum Laude from New Rochelle High school and received his bachelors from the University of Cincinnati where he was a member of the Pi Lamda Phi fraternity. After college he joined the Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. In 1967 he was admitted to the charter class of the ASU College of Law where he received his Juris Doctorate. Herb was community minded serving on numerous boards including the Phoenix Jaycees, Tempe Civitan Club, Professional Aid to the Handicapped, Tempe Center for the Handicapped, AZ Special Olympics, Tempe Sertoma, Listen, Inc, Tri-City Bar Association, Commercial Law League of America, Rural-Geneva Neighborhood Association, Mended Hearts and Temple Emanuel. Herb was a docent at the Tempe Historical Museum and Peterson House and volunteered at the Banner Desert Hospital Cardiac ICU. He was also an active Democratic and worked on numerous political campaigns. Herb loved bird watching and was a long-time member of the Maricopa Audubon Society where he championed environmental causes. He has been featured in the Arizona Republic, East Valley Tribune, New York Times and on several television and radio broadcasts, including PBS. One of his major accomplishments was a partnership with the Ft. McDowell Indian tribe to stop the construction of Orme Dam and was thereafter honored to walk in their annual victory parade. Herb also helped to form the Arizona Audubon Council and taught a Basic Birding class in Tempe for many years. He is survived by his lady friend Rose of Mesa, daughter Lori, son-in-law Phil and grandson Timm of Tempe and brother Joseph (Harriet) of New Rochelle NY. He is preceded in death by his wife Joyce and son David. Herb's infectious smile and witty jokes will be missed by everyone that knew him. He will be remembered for his love of his family, his community and fellow man. A Celebration Of His Life will be held Jan 11 at 11:00 am at Shalimar Country Club 2032 East Golf Ave Tempe, AZ 85282. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Maricopa Audubon Society for the Herb Fibel Education Program.
