Phoenix - (March 5, 1925 - January 22, 2018)

Austin McAvoy 92, died Monday, January 22, 2018 peacefully with family who loved him by his side. Austin was born in Detroit, Michigan. Soon after graduating from Danby High School, he joined the US Navy in WWII. He served heroically on the USS Intrepid, where he received a citation from Admiral McCain, for saving the lives of several of his shipmates, after the ship was struck by a Japanese Kamikaze.

After the war, he attended Kent State University and had a successful career with the Jewel Tea Company before moving to Arizona in 1961, where he opened Pioneer Camera Shop in the Tempe Center.

Austin was a founding member of the Tempe Diablos and a member of the Tempe Optimist Club. He proudly carried his private pilot license in his wallet, fondly sharing stories of his time in the air. Austin spent his spare time working the crossword puzzle or on the golf courses, around Arizona, trying to improve his game.

He is preceded in death by his parents Austin and Matilda (Staffen)McAvoy, his wife Theresa Vienna Hunnewell, Stepdaughter Barbara Hunnewell, his brother Fred McAvoy and his Aunt Elsie Landers. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Kimberly McAvoy Guariglio (husband, George) and Michael McAvoy (wife, Cheryl), 6 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday, March 5, 2018 at 4:00 PM at the Mesa City Cemetery. Due to Spring training game, it is recommended you use Country Club to enter the cemetery.
