Scottsdale - Barbara Jane Ely was the youngest daughter of Glen Allen and Helen Grace Ely of Guide Rock, Nebraska. She was born in Hastings, NE on December 20th, 1934 and resided in Guide Rock through the 8th grade. In 1950 the family moved to Red Cloud, NE where she graduated from high school in 1953. She participated in many activities including; band, cheerleading, glee club, and was Harvest of Harmony Queen and Sports Queen. She attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, majoring in Home Economics and belonging to a sorority, she graduated in 1957. She married in 1957 and in 1958 moved to Phoenix, Arizona with her husband Richard Curtis and newborn son Mark Allyn. They arrived to Phoenix in June and it was the hottest day on record at 118 degrees. Two other sons were born in 1959 and 1961, Gregory Leigh Curtis and Todd Anthony Curtis. The marriage to Richard ended after 26 years in 1983. Through the years Barbara worked for; National Speakers Bureau, DevCo Construction Co., Wilshire Mortgage Co., and Artists of the World in Phoenix and Scottsdale. She later attended Phoenix College and graduated with honors in paralegal studies. She was a legal assistant for a personal injury law firm in Phoenix and Scottsdale for a number of years. Barbara did volunteer work for Good Samaritan Hospital, the Arizona Humane Society Auxiliary, and was a Cub Scout den mother. In 1992 Barbara was married to Ernest Malcolm Plummer and they resided in Scottsdale, AZ. They traveled extensively throughout the world, played tennis and bridge together. Barbara's hobbies were her cats (she loved to spoil them) and she loved to needlepoint. She also enjoyed reading, bridge (she was a bronze master when she gave up master point bridge for fun bridge) and playing the piano and organ. Barbara adored her children and grandkids, CJ, Juliana, and Capri Curtis. They meant a lot to her and she loved being with them. They affectionately called her Gigi. Spending time with family was her favorite thing in life. Barbara and husband Mal owned a home in Flagstaff, AZ where they spent the summers to escape the Phoenix heat. The kids and grandkids also enjoyed the home in the summers and winters. Barbara has travelled extensively throughout; Mexico, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Columbia, South America and the Amazon. She also enjoyed many cruises throughout the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Barbara is survived by her sons, Mark and Todd Curtis; Todd's children CJ, Juliana, and Capri Curtis; her step daughter, Kimberly Plummer and her daughter, Kali. She is predeceased by her husband, Mal Plummer; her son, Greg Curtis; parents, Glen and Helen Ely; sister and husband, Margy and Curt Watson; and sister and husband, Dot and John Sherwood. all of Red Cloud, NE. Services and interment in her honor will be held Saturday, August 10th at 9:00 am at Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85257 with Rev. David Greene officiating. Visitation will be held the hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Arizona Humane Society in Barbara's name.
