Duane Swanson, 84, of Phoenix was taken up to heavenly glory to be with his Lord and Savior on April 10, 2016. He was born on April 20, 1931 in Duluth, MN. He grew up in Portland, OR and graduated with honors from Lewis and Clark College majoring in art, marketing and advertising. He served in the Air Force Reserve with a stint in Alaska. Duane was a beloved husband to Barbara (Bobbie), and a devoted father to four children. He enjoyed a 41 year career with U-Haul and its' affiliated advertising and marketing operation A&M Associates. He was a creative talent, dedicated leader and innovator. Some other advertising clients included radio station KOY and Legend City amusement park. He was a long-time member of the Phoenix Advertising Club and served as President in 1974. He was proud to obtain his flight certification for small aircraft. He was a member and President of Toastmasters. After retiring and moving to a mountain home in Starlight Pines, he joined the local Fire Department serving as a Captain for 17 years. Duane was an accomplished watercolorist, belonging to the Northern Arizona Watercolor Association and serving as a jurist. This professional hobby produced over 300 paintings, some of which were displayed in galleries, colleges, theaters, churches and many homes. Duane loved Jesus and studying and teaching the Bible. He was a leader in the Christian church and devoted to sharing the love of Christ with others by word and action. Duane cherished all who survived him: Bobbie his beloved wife of 62 years, daughter Elaine and husband Jack of Queen Creek, son Eric and wife Karen, daughter Valerie, and son Leif of Phoenix; 5 treasured grandchildren: Nicole, Janelle, Noelle, Taylor and Leah, 2 great grandchildren: Nathan and Austin, and his brother Robert and wife Marlene of Portland, OR. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard of Stockton, CA. Duane, always a grateful person, will be missed by all his family and friends, but will be joyfully remembered. A service celebrating Duane's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Christ Church Lutheran, 3901 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, 85018. Memorials may be made to Christ Church Lutheran, or , 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, 85014.
