James Johnson Obituary
James Johnson

Chandler - James H Johnson, 75, of Chandler Arizona, passed away Friday January 4, 2019 with his wife and family by his side. Jim, as he is known by family and friends, earned his wings after fighting a nearly decade-long battle with Multiple Myeloma.

Jim was born April 16, 1943 in Sioux Falls South Dakota to Hobart and Isabel Johnson. The youngest of 5 children and the only boy, Jim spent much of his childhood in the far reaches of the American West, outposts such as Keams Canyon and Tuba City, since his parents were educators for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. At the age of 13, Jim's parents sent him to the Wasatch Academy in Utah to continue his education, then eventually returning to Sioux Falls to attend Washington HS, where he graduated in 1961. Following his collegiate freshman year at UNM in Albuquerque, he transferred to Utah State in Logan, graduating with his Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1965.

Jim began his career in banking in 1966 with Valley National Bank, eventually becoming Vice President and Commercial Loan Officer. Following 20 years with VNB, Jim continued with other financial institutions, culminating with his retirement from the State of Arizona with the State Banking Department and the Corporation Commission. In the spirit of service to his country, much like his father who voluntarily enlisted in the US Navy during WWII, Jim enlisted and served two years in the US Army National Guard from 1968 to 1970. Jim was also an active member of the Mesa Host Lions Club for over 40 years, serving as the charter president in 1988. Following retirement, Jim was active in classic cars, routinely taking his vintage Chevrolet Corvair for a drive to and from car shows with his friends from the Cactus Corvair Car Club and the Solera Silver Classics. Jim and his wife Loretta enjoyed traveling the world over, though his favorite place to be was their second home in Butte, Montana.

Jim is survived by his wife of 30 years, Loretta Johnson of Chandler AZ, his son Ron and daughter-in-law Bobbie of Whitefish Bay WI, daughter Nikki of Phoenix AZ, daughter Kristin and son-in-law Ryan of Tucson AZ, daughter Veronica of Albuquerque NM, 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandson, sister Alberta, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was superseded in death by his parents, Hobart and Isabel, sisters Phyllis, Laura Ann and Janie.

The Celebration of Life for Jim Johnson will be held on Sunday January 27, 2019 at 1pm at the Solera Chandler Community Center ballroom at 6360 S Mountain Blvd, Chandler, AZ 85249.
