Joan Joosten Yensh Obituary
Joan Joosten Yensh

Phoenix - Joan Yensh, age 95, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, November 14, in Phoenix, Arizona. Born on August 3, 1923, to Louis and Eulalia (Markee) Joosten in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Joan was the middle child of seven siblings. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, she began her long and fulfilling teaching career in Wausau, WI, where she met and married Richard Yensh. They had one child. In 1959, they moved to the Bay Area, where Joan taught at Stanford University. Later, her husband was recruited by Arizona Highways magazine in Phoenix, where they remained. Joan was once accurately described as "a bouncing blonde with a winning smile". She enjoyed meeting people, while maintaining an intimate bond with her sisters. Her ebullience and talent endeared her everywhere. She sang movingly at weddings and played spontaneous piano by ear at gatherings. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, the National Education Association, and the Red Hat Society. Joan is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, two grandsons, two great-grandchildren, her sister, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and five siblings. A private memorial will be held in Phoenix, AZ. Donations in her honor may be made to the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Foundation in support of the Elementary Education Program, 2100 Main St, Suite 134, Stevens Point, WI 54481.
