John P. Engberg

Phoenix - John P. Engberg, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on April 30, 2018. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Col. John Arthur Engberg and Mary Lee Gregory. As a kid he caddied on the golf course at Fort Knox when the U.S. entered WWII. As a teen he attended Kentucky Military Institute (KMI) where he led the basketball team in a 27-0 season, setting school and state records. He spent a year in Korea with his father before attending Duke University as a NROTC cadet. He played varsity basketball under Coach Red Auerbach. He had a collegiate golf rivalry with Arnold Palmer of Wake Forest. After graduating, he served in the Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge, before returning to New York City where he began his banking career at Chase Manhattan Bank and met his wife. He enjoyed playing basketball in Madison Square Garden in a city league. His banking career would lead him to the Arizona Bank and Great Western Bank in Phoenix, the American State Bank in Newport Beach, then the Imperial Bank in San Francisco and Phoenix. He enjoyed his time overseeing Prescott Country Club where he led a major overhaul of the clubhouse and grounds. He was a loving and devoted husband of 60 years, and a compassionate and generous father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Shirley; his three children: Johnny, Ken, and Karen; his daughter-in-law Ari; his grandchildren: Ashton, Christopher, Erik, Alex, Paige, Wesley, and Georgia; and his grandpups: Coco, Pepperoni, Kiwi, Hanna, and Pancho. John lived a full and fruitful life and will be missed dearly by his family and friends. A private service will be held by the family.
