Merle Kenneth Pipho

Tempe - Merle Kenneth Pipho, age 93, died on Nov. 5, 2018 in Tempe, AZ.

Merle was born on May 6, 1925 in Denver, IA. He married Helen Andersen on June 29, 1947 in Cedar Falls, IA.

Merle was a dairy farmer for more than three decades before he grew tired of the cold Iowa winters and moved the family to Arizona - as he called it, "God's Country" - in 1970. He founded Pipho Milk Transportation in 1976.

He was an active member of the German-American National Congress (DANK) and served as president for nearly two decades. In 1998, he and Helen founded the German School of Phoenix, which offered language lessons to both adults and children.

Merle was happiest reading a book at home, swimming in his pool or travelling with his wife of 71 years to Germany.

Merle is survived by his wife, Helen; his son, Gerald, and Dorothie Marsden of Sonoma, CA; his daughter, Sandy Purdy of Chandler and her husband, Jeff; as well as his granddaughters, Brianna (Justus) Burkitt and Kelsey Purdy.

He is preceded in death by his son, Ronald.

A funeral will be held at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Tempe on Monday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception. Donations can be made to the church in lieu of flowers.
