Madoff-Scheske, Michelle
Former City of Pittsburgh Councilwoman, died on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the age of 85. Michelle served as a City of Pittsburgh Councilwoman between 1978 and 1994. Born in Toronto, Canada, Michelle moved to the United States in 1952 and to the Pittsburgh Squirrel Hill neighborhood in 1961. She ran several unsuccessful campaigns for Pittsburgh City Council 1973 and Allegheny County Commissioner in 1975. She was first elected in 1978 to fill the unexpired term of Richard Caliguiri. When the Pittsburgh City Council switched from one being elected at-large to a by-district format, Michelle was the first person elected to represent Council District 2. Michelle was, at that time, one of Pittsburgh's most prominent and high profile public officials. Before entering politics Michelle was a community and environmental activist. In 1969 Michelle co-founded and was the first president of the Group Against Smog and Pollution (GASP) a local group with a long history of environmental activism. Michelle was concerned primarily with the reduction of air pollution in the City of Pittsburgh. There is a collection of papers consisting mostly of published materials relating to environmental topics and related information about GASP to combat pollution in Pittsburgh. These papers are called the Michelle Madoff Papers. The papers have been published by the University of Pittsburgh, ULS Archives Service Center. ([email protected]). Michelle is survived by her loving husband, author, Fred Scheske of Peoria, AZ, daughter, Karenlin Madoff, Esq. of Los Angeles, CA, step son, Daniel Scheske of Scottsdale, AZ, step daughter, Catherine Scheske Dallal of Dallas TX, many nieces, nephews and loving friends. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, October 26 at Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel in Sun City West.
