Mildred Maurene "Mo" Helmkay Obituary
Helmkay, Mildred "Mo" Maurene
passed away August 6, 2017 at her mountain view home. She was born December 23, 1931 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Earl and Vera McCoy. She was a graduate of Ottumwa High School. In 1962 she moved to Arizona to begin her life as a career girl, working for the Maricopa County Probation office. That was short lived as she met and married the love of her life, Philip Helmkay. They bought the Geno Pizza franchise where she sweated her bootie off in the summer time making pizza. For many years, she was a diligent supporter of the South Phoenix community. Maurene was active in the South Phoenix Festival of Thanksgiving, South Mountain YMCA, area Little League, Soroptomist, South Phoenix Arts Festival, Salvation Army and special events with Phoenix Parks and Recreation. Maurene's favorite community activity was the Haunted House/Hayride which served four generations of her community. Maurene's hands not only created pizza, but touched many lives in her community. Preceded in death by her husband, Phil, son, Philip, parents, two brothers, one sister, a great-granddaughter, Angelina and best friend Judy Bradley. Maureen is survived by her son, Jack (Tammie) Helmkay; granddaughter, Rachel Caruso; grandson, Jared (Fran) Helmkay; great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Sarah, Seth, Isobel, Megan, David; great-granddaughter, Lucy Blue; many nieces and nephews; her traveling buddies, aka, The Golden Girls and Casino Clan. Also remaining to cherish her wit, humor and love of life are two sisters, one brother, and the Banner Hospice team (plus Fred). Maurene will be missed and continued to be loved by all that she touched. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 PM, Monday, August 14, 2017, at Lowman's Arizona Funeral Home, 717 West Dobbins Road, Phoenix, Arizona. (602) 276-3601.
