Nick Ivins Obituary

Nick Ivins of Mesa, Arizona passed away July 17, 2004. Nick was born June 13, 1981, in Mesa and attended Jordan Elementary, Rhodes Junior High and Dobson High School. He was in his Senior year at A.S.U. having made the Dean's list while studying what he loved, English Literature. Nick always questioned ideas and loved to learn for the sake of learning. Books were his passion. He was a very accomplished singer, guitar player and actor. Nick leaves behind his beloved sister Hayley, parents Ed and Jaki, and his dog Lucky. Also missing him are his grandparents, his 4 aunts, 3 uncles and 9 cousins. Nick was such a sensitive and gentle man that he was loved by all who knew him. His intellect was extraordinary and a gift to all who had a chance to see his writings or talk with him about philosophy, literature or politics. His courageous battle with leukemia was an inspiration to all who encountered him. A light has gone out in this world not only for those who already knew Nick but also for those who would have come to know him. A Memorial Service and celebration of his life will be held at his family home on Thursday, July 22 at 6:00 p.m. Nick loved learning, and therefore, the family suggests donations to the ASU Foundation for an endowed scholarship in his memory—to help others discover the joy of literature. Checks should be made payable to the ASU Foundation. Please send your donation to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, PO Box 871701, ASU, Tempe, AZ 85287-1701, with a note that it is for the endowed scholarship in memory of Nicholas Ivins. Arrangements, Hansen Mortuary.

Dear Ed and Jaki,

So sorry for your loss. Jaki wrote and told me how you and he worked and rode to work together almost everyday. So much like Donny and I. Ed I know how much that hurts believe me. There is nothing in this world like a father and son relationship and to lose it is just devastating.

Dear Jaki, Ed, and Hayley,

I've started this note to you over and over again. It is so hard to think of what to say. None of us can ever know the pain that your family has been through not only with Nick's passing but in his courageous battle with leukemia. Through the years we have lost touch, but I will always remember Nick fondly. Dominic really enjoyed his Elementary years with Nick and baseball as well. I will always remember his hard work and dedication to everything he tried. In baseball, his sportsmanship was admirable. I know that although I didn't get to know him as a young man, I know he was quite remarkable. The testaments of his many friends atest to that fact. Jaki, Ed and Hayley, you have our sincerest condolances, and our prayers and best wishes for some peace to come. Nick's passing at such a young age, gives me cause to think of how blessd I am and how important it is to cherish life and times with family and friends. Wishing you Peace and Love - you will forever be in our hearts and prayers. Love Ray & Trenda Gomez

He was always going the additional step to help us meet our customer's needs. Nick, you will be missed so very much.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Ed, Jaki, Hayley and the rest of your family during this most difficult of times. Our sincerest and heart-felt condolences.

I just got the news last night that Nick died of leukemia. I am really shocked and quite shaken by the tragic news. I had no idea that he had been struck by this terrible disease. I wish I could have been at his memorial service to remember him and celebrate his life with his family and friends. I am extremely saddened by his passing. I will always remember Nick for his intelligence, his quiet sense of humor and laughter, his smile, and his passion and love for his family. Nick will always have a special place in my heart for the time we spent together growing up. This is a life taken way too soon. Ed, Jaki, and Hayley, I hope you can take some solace in the fact that your son and brother was really respected and loved by so many, including myself. My prayers are with you during this time. Love, Dominic.

I will always remember Nick's smile and his wonderful acting talent as I watched him in the Christmas Play from Jr. High. Nick was one of my adopted sons who spent many many nights eating, laughing and partying with his best buds Abe, Ceasar, and Mike in my home. The boys grew up knowing, loving and supporting each other in ways only best friends could ever remember. It is such a loss for all of us and my thoughts and prayers to Nick, his family and friends, Nick will be missed.

I am just so blessed that I was able to know Nick, to go to Jr. High and High School with him, to sing with him, and to be on stage with him. I'm so grateful that I was given the opportunity to see the beauty, wit, strength, and brilliance inside him, which he passed on to everyone he met. I only regret that we lost touch. I am so, so sorry for the loss of such an amazing gift in Nick. He touched my heart and countless others and there he will remain.

I remember the first time I met Nick. It was the first day of school in 1987 at Jordan Elementary. When my mother dropped me off for class, I found myself surrounded by kids I didn’t know on the playground. That was until I spotted a shy young boy across the basketball courts who was dressed (by his mother no doubt) as well as my mother had dressed me that morning. I immediately felt a commonality between Nick and myself, so I approached him as he was waiting in line for class and introduced myself. While the rest of the kids at school were dressed in hot orange and hot pink shirts and playing tetherball, Nick and I stood together and waited for first grade to start. We had been friends ever since. Nick was the kind of friend that I could talk to about anything: music (Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks mostly), movies, books, politics, and sports. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Nick was blessed by his compassion, his talent, and his heart. I am deeply saddened to have lost such as good friend. Nick was filled with so much life and love for others, his spirit will live on in all of our hearts forever. I will cherish every memory I have with Nick, and his strength will always be an inspiration to me. Thank you Nick, I’ll miss you.

In his short life, Nick had an impact on so many people. We all here at City of Hope-Samaritan BMT Program admired him and respected him for his courage in his fight against leukemia. He will truly remain in our hearts and minds for a very long time.

Nick didn't know me, but I sure knew him. To me, he will always be handsome Harold Hill, the big ninth grader that all the seventh grade drama students adored. I can't imagine him as anything other than what I remember from all those years ago: a charismatic, talented young man with his future ahead of him. My prayers are certainly with his family and friends as they gather for the memorial service this evening.

I had the pleasure of teaching Nick while he was a student pursuing English Studies at ASU--and I do mean the pleasure was all mine! Nick was a wonderful presence in my classrooms, and his love of learning, his open-hearted compassion and opened-minded pursuit of knowledge, and his constant good-cheer was felt by everyone in the class. I knew of Nick's struggles with illness, since we upon rare occasions compared notes about our experiences along these lines, and his attitude toward life was a model for all of us; it's not important how much time one has but rather what one does with the time that one is given. I also know his attitude toward death is equally a model for all for us--an attitude perhaps best expressed by one of his favorite poets, William Blake, who said that he could not view death as anything other than walking through a door from one room to another. I will carry Nick with me in my deep mind and heart for the days, weeks, months and years left to me as a teacher. Thanks Nick!!

No words can ease the heartbreak,
no tears or memories can take
away the loss of one who's gone,
of one you've loved since he was born.
No one can help us while bereft
from grief that one we loved hasleft;
has travelled from where we could see
to where his heart and soul fly free

So when we're able to, we dwell
on all the love we knew so well;
and know that God has taken home
the one He loaned us for so long.

Having the pleasure to have known Nick was a blessing and a gift, not only to my life but also to the lives of everyone else he has known and affected in the countless ways that he did. His witty sense of humor, perseverance and confident sense of self was something that I admired and will take with me throughout my life; for that I am thankful. We will all miss you Nick, but none of us will ever forget you.

I always wish I'd gotten a chance to know Nick better, but for the time I had with him, I'll always be grateful. We were classmates since seventh grade, and in that time I got to be in multiple plays with him, a writing class, a summer acting course, and a brief bit of choir. I knew him as a talented singer, actor, and writer, and a tremendously funny and friendly guy. He was a great gift to the world, and I'm blessed to have known him.
