Norma B. Nelson Obituary
Norma B. Nelson

Surprise - Norma B. Nelson, 89, died at her home on Wednesday, November 28, 2018. She was born in Denver, Colorado on April 5, 1929 and raised in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. A sharp student, Norma skipped half of second grade and received her first accordion that year, beginning her lifelong study and love of music. With voice lessons and a stint singing at Lowry Air Force Base amongst others, Norma pursued a degree in sacred music from Rockmont College. She continued her musical training at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas where she would meet her soon-to-be husband, theology student, Stan Nelson. They married December 28, 1956. Norma would go on to direct the choirs of every church her husband pastored, as well as a few that he didn't. Once her children were old enough she returned to graduate school to earn a Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. Norma's curiosity brought her to work and travel in more than 30 countries, including three years as a missionary in Ogbomosho, Nigeria. Back in the United States she spent her professional years in social work, serving the developmentally disabled children of California. Norma chose to enjoy her retirement years in the desert of Arizona, and she felt it was a great privilege to be elected one of the first women deacons of the First Baptist Church of Sun City West.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Dr. Stanley Nelson, and her loving children Lisa Nelson of Surprise and James Nelson and his wife Melanie Taylor of Brooklyn, New York. She is predeceased by her parents Selma and Henry Baird, and brothers Ken and Don Baird.

The family would like to thank Hospice of the Valley for their compassionate care. A remembrance of life service will be held Tuesday, December 11 at 10:30am at the First Baptist Church of Sun City West, 17419 Conquistador Drive, Sun City West, AZ 85375.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Norma's memory to Habitat for Humanity, 322 West Lamar Street, Americus, Georgia 31709-3543.
