Reginald Sydnor Obituary

Reginald G. Sydnor, a prominent architect, passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2004 at the age of 75. Son of the late Vivian E. Sydnor and late Bina S. Sydnor. Reg was born on June 24, 1928, in Hinton, West Virginia and spent his childhood in Huntington, West Virginia. After graduating from Huntington High School in 1946, Reg attended Marshall University for two years before entering the University of Michigan and earning his Bachelor in Architecture Degree in 1952. He then began a 42-year career as an architect with earlier positions in Bremerton and Yakima, Washington. In 1955 he moved to Phoenix with his wife, Dorothy M. Sydnor and his first three children. Two additional children were born into the family shortly thereafter. He joined the well respected architectural firm Edward L. Varney Associates where he later became a partner in 1963 and the firm renamed Varney Sexton Sydnor Architects - Planners. He remained there for 25 years until 1980. He then started a new practice Sydnor Architects, P. C. in Phoenix for the next 10 years, which was followed by 3 years at a high-technology firm in San Jose, California doing Stanford University facilities. In 1993 he retired to many other interests. During his professional career he produced throughout Arizona hundreds of award-winning public facilities including schools and governmental buildings, and institutional work as high technology and particularly health care facilities. Specific projects he was most proud of included the Phoenix Municipal Building and Council Chambers, Arizona State University College of Education and Life Sciences Addition, John C. Lincoln Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, Baptist Hospital of Phoenix, Yuma Regional Medical Center, Phoenix Memorial Hospital, Glendale Community College, Motorola Governmental Electronics plants and many more. Civic activities included Camelback Kiwanis Club, Paradise Valley Planning Commission and Board of Adjustment, City of Phoenix Building Safety Advisory Council, and the American Institute of Architects. Along side his wife, he enjoyed travel, painting, walking, biking, dancing, gardening, collecting contemporary art and furnishings, real estate and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy M. Sydnor, of Scottsdale; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Sonia Sydnor of Scottsdale; daughter and son-in-law Vicki and Karl Fredericks of Maplewood, New Jersey; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Susan Sydnor of Scottsdale; daughter and son-in-law Rebecca and Thomas Richards of Phoenix; son and daughter-in-law Bradley and Maureen Sydnor of Phoenix; and nine grandchildren.
