Richard Mayer Levy Obituary
Levy, Richard Mayer
Richard Mayer Levy, 78, of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away at his home on October 2, 2017 after a long illness. Dick will be remembered by family and friends from coast to coast for his warm smile, quick wit, and kindness to all. Dick was born in 1939 in Hartford, Connecticut to Alex A. Levy and Margaret Goldblatt Levy. He moved with his parents and younger brother Bob to his mother's hometown of Kansas City at the end of World War II. Dick graduated from Southwest High School in 1957 and from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1961. After working briefly in his family's tool manufacturing business in Kansas City, Dick moved to Boston to take graduate courses in publishing at Harvard. While there, a childhood friend from Hartford introduced him to the love of his life, Marsha Lewis. Dick and Marsha were married in 1963 and settled in Wellesley, Massachusetts where they raised two children, Jeff and Robin. An English major, Dick built a career around his love of language, working mostly in advertising and publishing for 25 years. Among his entrepreneurial ventures, Dick founded RichAd advertising agency, Lanewood Press, and Arandel Publishing Co. While at Arandel he published a series of consumer-oriented health guides in collaboration with New England Medical Center, which were sold at pharmacies throughout New England. In addition to a good detective novel, Dick enjoyed jazz and classical music (especially sitting in the front row of his children's band and orchestra performances at Wellesley High School), bridge, sailing, travel, "playing" on his computer, and a well placed pun. He especially appreciated any opportunity to spend time with his four grandchildren, who loved visiting Pop Pop for hugs and peppermint patties. In 78 years, it's possible that Dick never passed a dog without stopping to scratch its ears. Dick leaves his son Jeff and daughter-in-law Gayle Goldin of Providence, RI; daughter Robin and son-in-law Jim Kenny of Scottsdale, AZ; grandsons Zack and Jonah Levy; granddaughters Meredith and Jillian Kenny; sisters-in-law Frances Baer of Titusville, FL, Luise Levy of Tucson, AZ and Valerie Francese of Telluride, CO; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Dick was predeceased by his wife and parents, and by his brother Robert H. Levy. Donations may be made in Dick's memory to the Hispanic Federation's Puerto Rico hurricane relief fund (hispanicfederation.org), to Americans for Responsible Solutions (americansforresponsiblesolutions.org), or to the . The Levy and Kenny families wish to thank the wonderful staff at Maravilla Scottsdale for helping to take such loving care of Dick during the last few years.
