Sylvia Barkin-Hahn Obituary
Sylvia Barkin-Hahn

Phoenix - Sylvia Barkin-Hahn, 92, passed away on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018 at Ryan House (Hospice of the Valley) in Phoenix after a brief illness. She was born in Rochester, NY on September 27, 1925 and graduated from Highland Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. In 1949, she married Ted Barkin with whom she had three children. In 1959, the family moved to Phoenix from New Jersey.

In her 30s, Sylvia was one of the first "older" women to return to school. She received her Bachelor and Masters degrees in English Literature (with honors) from ASU and spent the next 24 years teaching English and Government at Orangewood Elementary in the Washington School District.

After 27 years of marriage, she and Ted divorced. In 1988, Sylvia married Ernest Hahn, the love of her life.

Sylvia was a wonderful mother. She was kind, caring, supremely organized, and friendly to everyone she met. Over a period of forty years, she developed deep relationships with her neighbors, members of her bridge club, and people that she met while traveling. She rescued and adored the pets in her life.

Survivors include Ernie Hahn; her children, Debra, Laurie (Brian), and Andy (Raye Ann) and grandchildren: Brian, Corianne, Danny, Ben, Quinna, and Jack.

Sylvia requested that contributions be made in her honor to the Arizona Humane Society. We would also like to thank the staff of Ryan House/Hospice of the Valley for the excellent care they gave to Mom during her last days.
