Thomas R. Hill Obituary
Thomas R. Hill

Phoenix - Thomas R. Hill, 78, died peacefully on May 12, 2018 surrounded by family at HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center. He was born October 19, 1939 in Columbus, Ohio and was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas J. and Virginia (Hunt) Hill, as well as his sister Joan Gray. He was also affectionately known as Buddha, Big Daddy, Whitey, Chirp, Thom Ass, and Hill.

Tom will be dearly missed by his wife Susan Fravel; daughters Sheila (Terry) Ballard and Krista (Dennis) Hoodlet; grandaughters Danielle Ayres, Alissa Ballard, and Alexis Ayres; grandson Nick (Jessica) Hoodlet; sister Shirley Kindig and brother William (Sue) Hill. He had 5 great-grandchildren, 7 nieces, and 2 nephews. Jared Hill, who was especially close, aspires to be as good a poker player as his uncle.

Tom served honorably in the Navy from 1956 to 1960 on the radar destroyer, Charles P. Cecil, out of Norfolk,Va. In 1965, he joined the Columbus Police Department where he proudly served alongside his fellow officers until his retirement in 1990 as a detective in the Organized Crime Bureau.

Tom & Susan moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1997 to enjoy his retirement years. His days were filled with poker (Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or better) at Casino Arizona at Talking Stick, golf where he proudly achieved a hole in one, and occasional visits to Las Vegas where he could be heard yelling out "Fire 'Em Up" at the craps table. Traveling the world throughout his life brought him much joy. He especially loved the museums and history of Vienna, Normandy, and Paris. On occasion, being a good sport, he joined Susan for birdwatching which he thought was like watching paint dry.

Tom was funny…very funny…and smart…and a smartass quite often. He was fiercely loyal to his wide net of family and friends. He gave the gift of laughter to all who knew him through his special kind of humor and quick wit.

A Celebration of Life gathering is being planned for both Phoenix and Columbus on dates yet to be determined. Cremation is being handled by Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary. As a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Tom would appreciate your support to the FOP Capital City Lodge #9 Foundation at 6800 Schrock Hill Ct. Columbus, Oh 43229 if you would like to make a donation in his memory.

His family would like to sincerely thank the medical staff at HonorHealth Osborn for the exceptional care he received in the ER and ICU. Tom lived on his own terms from the beginning to the end of his life. Hope you finally win the BIG end of the jackpot wherever you are!
