Richard N. "Dick" Sheets Obituary
Sheets, Richard N. "Dick"
82, died August 28 following a brief battle with cancer. Born April 14, 1931 in Frankfort, IN to Martha and Cecil Sheets, Dick was a natural athlete with a love of Football and Baseball which continued through his college days at Purdue University. He married his sweetheart, Carolyn Briney in 1952 and a year later received his BA in physical education as well as his first son, Rick. The second son, Greg followed 2 ½ years later. After struggling to support a family on teacher's wages, the family moved to Arizona and Dad became a sales rep for Motorola in 1960 earning a whopping $100 per week. He won the top inside salesman award in 1961 and continued there for another 20 years. However, he never lost his love for learning / teaching, earning his MA in education in 1968 and his Education Specialist degree in 1971. After Carolyn and Rick graduated from college, Dad went back to teaching math & science at the Osborn Middle School and later in Mesa. He taught for another 20 years specializing in math and computer education before retiring. The folks moved to Sun City West in 1998 which gave Dad the opportunity to pursue his other great love---golf. He played for the pure joy of competing with himself. He was a past president and still very active with the "Handicapables" group in Sun City West. He is survived by his wife of 60 years-Carolyn; son-Rick (and Barbara) Sheets of Sun City West, AZ; son-Greg Sheets (and Gary Beavan) of Yakima, WA; brother-Larry Sheets of Phoenix; and sister-Charlotte Barrella of Phoenix, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Camino Del Sol Funeral Chapel in Sun City West, AZ on Tues. Sept 3rd with viewing at 9:30 am and service at 10:30 am.
