Johnston, Kenneth Eugene
84, passed away February 24, 2014. Ken was born June 28, 1929 in Hocking (Albia), Monroe County Iowa. Ken sold newspapers on a corner of Lucas County courthouse square evening of December 7, 1941. Ken ("Dugan") graduated from Chariton High School where he played football, later played independent baseball, basketball. Ken served with Iowa National Guard 1947-56, also U.S. Army Retired Reserve 1956-61. He was employed with Montgomery Ward in Chariton five years. He moved to Des Moines where he began a 40-year retail shoe sales management career with Wohl Shoe Company of St. Louis who transferred him and family from Des Moines to Moline IL, Lincoln NE, Cincinnati OH, Fort Wayne IN, Dallas TX, and then to Phoenix in 1972. His most prized sales award was a trip for two to London, England in April 1989. He retired in 1992. A few months after moving to Des Moines, Ken met Helen Dey at Tromar Ballroom where Vaughn Monroe and his band were playing on a cold, snowy, January Saturday night. Ken and Helen were married five months later in St. Paul Methodist Church Chapel in Lincoln Nebraska June 28, 1953, his birthday. While living in Cincinnati Ohio, they adopted two toddlers, Leanne and Andy. They celebrated 60 years of marriage, happily content at their south Scottsdale home since 1973, longtime Christians, members of Tempe Church of Christ. Ken served on Board of Directors for Sunny Dale Children's Home in Phoenix. Survivors include Ken's wife Helen, daughter Leanne Johnston, doggies Lucky and Ringo; also sister-in-law Donna Brand of Somers IA, sister-in-law Mary (Roger) Jensen of Humboldt IA, and nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death is son Michael Andrew Johnston of Phoenix, parents David and Jeannette Gore Rainerson Johnston of Chariton Iowa, sister Mildred Brown of Chariton, and brother-in-law Roger Brand very recently. Services will be at Messinger Mortuary Chapel, 7601 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale AZ 85251. Visitation will begin at 8am Saturday March 1, 2014 before a Celebration of Ken's Life service at 10am. Interment will follow at Green Acres Cemetery, 401 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale AZ 85257. Lunch will be served at Tempe Church of Christ following the
ceremony at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, suggested memorial gifts may be made to , or to Tempe Church of Christ - Brother's Keeper Fund (2424 S. Mill Avenue, Tempe Arizona 85282).
