Donald Sherline

Scottsdale - Donald M. Sherline, M.D. of Scottsdale, AZ, passed away November 25, 2018, at age 87. Dr. Sherline was the son of Edward and Rose Sherline. He was raised in Utica, NY and was an honor graduate of Utica College. He continued his education at Northwestern University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University-affiliated hospitals in Chicago and a fellowship in OB Anesthesia at McDonald House of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He was board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Dr. Sherline loved delivering babies and teaching students. During his professional life he was on the faculty of Northwestern University School of Medicine, the University of Hawaii, the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, Rush Medical College in Chicago and the Medical College of Georgia. He retired from the Medical College of Georgia in 1995 as the Brooks Professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology. He returned to Chicago as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Cook County Hospital. He was President of the Association of Gynecology and Obstetrics and co-founder and first president of that association's education foundation. He was also President of the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine and an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1993, during his sabbatical, he was a member of the high-risk obstetrical service at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, England, an Honorary Consultant in the British National Health Service, and a member of Green College of Oxford University. He loved family, reading, history, flying, skeet shooting and baking bread. He was twice a member of the National Skeet Shooting Association Veteran's All-American Team and soloed in a glider at age 75. To his family, he was always the source of any fact on WWII and airplanes. Dr. Sherline was a veteran of the United States Navy Reserve and the United States Air Force. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 60 years, Sandra Lobdell Sherline, their children Edward (April), Mark (Sydney), Linda (Karen), Ann and five grandchildren: Jacob, Eleanor, Aemon, Carson and Samuel. He is also survived by his brother Jay. He was pre-deceased by his brothers Merwin, Gerald, and Bernard and his sisters Elaine Fein and Diane Sherline. Don will be interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix, AZ. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Utica College or a charity of your choice.
