Barney, Talmage Dennis
passed away peacefully at his home on January 5, 2009. He was 62 years old. Dennis was born on February 8, 1946 in Phoenix, Arizona to Talmage and Clarene Robson Barney. Dennis worked together with his beloved parents and four sisters on the family farm and aspired to continue a life of farming by obtaining a degree in Agricultural Economics from Arizona State University. In 1967, after serving a mission to England for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Dennis married his high school sweetheart, Ann Pomeroy. Together they were blessed to raise 10 wonderful children and become the proud grandparents of 24 grandchildren. His diverse professional career included ventures ranging from ranching, to custom home building and land development. Dennis was actively involved with the growth of the East Valley and instrumental in numerous developments including Circle G Ranches, Val Vista Lakes, and The San Tan Village Shopping Center. Dennis was the first chairman and a founding board member of The United Food Bank and sat on several other boards and commissions. Dennis actively served in his church in many capacities including as a High Councilor and Bishop. At the time of his passing, Dennis was serving the LDS student population at Arizona State University as President of the ASU Student Stake. His understanding of the power of faith to change the world gave him a strong respect for the beliefs of others leading to extensive involvement in the Arizona Interfaith Movement. His crowning joy in life was his family. His favorite place to be was up on the family ranch with Ann, surrounded by his children, grandchildren and horses. Dennis is survived by Ann, his wife of 41 years, and his children Jason (Traci), Denny (Nichole), DeAnn (Kade), Jennifer (Talan), Stacy (Greg), Darin (Megan), Bryan (Shelly), Kimberly (Drummer), Justin , Lindsey and his four sisters, Sue Ann Huso, Kathy Thompson, Jeanne Copple, Jaynie Stahle, and numerous extended family whom he loved. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Talmage and Clarene, and granddaughter, Ella. Dennis could be defined in one sentence: Dennis Barney never met a person he didn't love. A viewing will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, at the Barney home, 1075 N. Honeysuckle Lane in Gilbert. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Val Vista Stake Center, 1005 N. Voyager, Gilbert. The funeral service also will be broadcast at the LDS Institute of Religion, Tempe, Arizona University Stake, 1000 W. McAllister Ave., Tempe; LDS Chapel, 1150 E. Guadalupe Road, Gilbert; and LDS Chapel, 1483 N. Driftwood Drive, Gilbert. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the United Food Bank at (480) 926-4897, Arizona Interfaith Movement at (602) 261-6704, or General Missionary Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Dear Ann and Family,
What a wonderful tribute to a great man you and your children gave at Dennis' funeral. He was surely an example to us all in word and deed and he has left his mark of charity and love upon all who knew him. You have reason to be extremely proud of your wonderful family. It was evident that your children have been loved and taught well by the dear father and also their dear mother. Thank you for sharing your remembrances of Dennis and your testimonies of the Plan of Salvation and our Savior Jesus Christ. We were all lifted and strengthened by them. We will remember Dennis for his kind heart, his generosity, and his love of family and friends.

Dennis created a beach in Gilbert! In the late 80's we were hosting Gilbert's first "bling" community event - The "Spring Fling" benefit fashion show. Dennis donated the (first and years to come) use of the 'almost' completed Val Vista Lakes club house for our event. The night before the event he surprised us by having the beach brought in weeks ahead of schedule. Knowing Dennis through the years of his community chilvary I wouldn't have been surprised if he could have moved mountains as well!

This is for Dennis, from our family, written by Brad:

STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS

"Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
gives me a giant view,
and opens up a world of things
that I would like to do.
A helping hand to others
is a wonderful place to start.
It helps me feel the great big love
inside a Giants heart.
A kind word and a smile
may at first not seem like much,
but they leave the huge impression
of a Giants loving touch.
And when the day is done
and your time together is through,
My greatest wish is that I can be
A Giant Just Like You."

Dear Ann and family,

From my earliest memories as a child on our own cotton farm, very near his in Mesa, Denny was my best friend. We attended grade school, Junior High and High School, went through our scouting years, struggling to get our Eagle Badge together, always in the same Ward until our Missions. During High School I finally realized that he liked you, Ann, better than me. Then missions and school sent us on different paths but the love we had developed as boys has always been there. He has always been an example in both word and deed. And as we would meet together through the years at class reunions and General Conference we would immediately feel the same love and comradship of our youth. These relationships thankfully last through the eternities and help direct our actions while we remain in this frail existence. I express to you, Ann, thanks for being a wonderful companion and helpmeet to help make him the great man that I knew he would become as a boy. God bless you all till you meet again.

I first met Dennis Barney before moving to Mesa in 1976, while he was preparing my soon-to-be brother-in-law for baptism. After moving to Mesa, as luck would have it the Barney's were our neighbors until they moved to Gilbert and have been dear and special friends ever since. We have shared many experiences together, both church, business and pleasure and as with everyone, he always made us feel like we were his best friend. He was the most honest, humble, loving, caring, and fun person I have ever known, and he will always be one of those examples you aspire to be. I was convinced a long time ago that Dennis Barney was one of the three Nephites, and I heard it best described today that when you are in the presence of Dennis Barney, you are in the presence of an angel. I am sure there was a problem in heaven--probably having to do with the young single adults--that only Dennis could resolve. He was huge in so many ways, and while he leaves a bigger void that will never be filled, he leaves even a bigger legacy of love and integrity to all that had the extreme priviledge and blessing to be associated with Dennis Barney. If I am ever fortunate enough to see him again, I know it will because he put in a kind word for me. We love him like words cannot express. We will miss him tremondlously. We are better off and will be forever blessed because of our friendship with Dennis Barney.

"Oh, that each from his Lord, may receive the glad word; 'Well and faithfully done. Enter into my joy and sit done on my throne." These are surely the words that greeted Dennis. We pray for your peace and comfort in knowing the plan of our Heavenly Father. You have a great family who are truly jewels in your crown as an eternal family. May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Dear Ann and Family,
Brenda and I and our family wish to send our love to you all. I grew up listening to stories about the wonderful trips you and Dennis took with my parents back in the carpet business days. I especially liked the one about the camel in Morocco! Every time I saw Dennis, he always put his arm around me and wanted to know how I was doing. He always asked about my parents and my family. I have known Dennis as a friend, a businessman, a church leader and a family man. He will always be one of my heroes. May you all receive the strength and support you need in this difficult time as blessings from a life well lived are poured out from all corners. We love you and keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Bishop Barney was my bishop for many years, he married my husband & I nearly 12 years ago. About 6 years ago, his family was visiting a little town called Whitefish Montana, where my husband was a police officer. The Barney family came to church one Sunday & when they left, I called my husband (who was working that day) and gave him the description and lic plate info on the Barney's family vehicle. So my husband "pulled them over, lights and all" and it tickled their family to pieces! We were so happy to see their family! And I know they got quite a laugh that dad got pulled over by a police officer! Thank you Bishop Barney for always being there for everyone! We love you & send our heartfelt love and best to the entire Barney family!

We extend to, Ann and all of your family our sympathy and condolences. Dennis was very special to us. We moved into the 18th Ward in 1961 when Talmage, his father was the Bishop and Don was asked to be the Priest Quorum Advisor and Dennis was in the Quorum. They had many wonderful experiences. He has always been our friend all these years. We have always admired him, he has left a wonderful legacy for his family to remember. Our prayers are with you and my God's promise of eternity bring you peace.

1 John 4:19 speaks of the Savior: "We love him, because he first loved us." The same can be said of Dennis Barney. Everyone who knew him loved him, because he first loved us. He influenced so many people. Before I ever met Dennis Barney, my father told me what a wonderful, caring person he was. I was privileged to feel and experience that for myself. I'll never forget the many outings, snow skiing, water skiing, bear hunts, etc. There are many teaching moments he gave us that I have often reflected on and treasured. Dennis Barney loved God and loved his brother. May his legacy live on and on. And may Ann, Jason, Denny, DeAnn, and all the rest of the tremendous Barney family be blessed and comforted at this time of loss.

Dear Ann and Family, The Barney family has been an inspiration to our family. When just a young single adult I (Sue) sat in the council of my then beloved Bishop Dr. Barney. Dennis along with his sisters were a positive friendship that has carried on through the years. Since that time generations have followed and my family has continued to enjoy "your" love, support, and prayers. Now we offer no less to you. Thank you for the may good deeds and dedication to life your family has presented and the friendship you've shared. Dennis will not only be missed but the loss of his big earthly heart will leave a hole in ours that will abide in mourning and loss with you. Simply sent with admiration, respect, and love to you all.
