Neal Arthur Vanselow, MD, age 84, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2016 surrounded by his family. Neal was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1932. Neal earned his bachelor's degree in political science in 1954 and his M.D. in 1958, both at the University of Michigan. He completed his internship at Minneapolis General Hospital and returned to the University of Michigan for his residency and a fellowship in immunology and allergy. He completed a master's in Internal Medicine in 1963. He then became a faculty member in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School where he later became chairman of Post Graduate Medicine. From 1974 to 1977, Neal served as Dean of the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. He then became chancellor of the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha in 1977. From 1982 to 1989, he served as vice president of the Academic Health Center at the University of Minnesota. Neal was named chancellor of Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans in 1989, where the Neal and Mary Vanselow Chair in Health Management and Policy was established in the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Neal served in leadership positions in on the Association of Academic Health Centers, the Council of Graduate Medical Education and the Association of Graduate Medical Colleges. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine) in 1989, and coordinated several studies on graduate medical education and primary care. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and board certified in Allergy and Immunology. He belonged to the Who's Who in the World 2014. Neal is survived by his wife Mary of 57 years, two children: Julie Fischer (Don) and Richard Vanselow (Tara) and five grandchildren: Katherine, Michael and Andrew Fischer, and Abe and Jules Vanselow. He is also survived by his brother Donald Vanselow. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, April 23 at 11 am at St. Anthony's on the Desert in Scottsdale, AZ. Reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anthony's on the Desert.
